OK,
I think i get the idea, the site is ok, a little bland, but i amnot sure it really needs to be spectacular considering what you are hoping to achieve, there are few issues the click for more button on the header overlapped some text and so it wasn't really readbale and some of the text doesn't read correctly in a couple of places.

Hi Tony,
Many thanks for your reply. What part of the header overlaps? Also, what parts of the writing do not read correctly?
If you could send a screenshot to brummiebugger@yahoo.co.uk of what you see on your screen that would massively help me out!
thank you

Nothing overlaps on my screen, even when I reduce the browser size. Maybe it is a cross browser issue, I use IE8.
I love the idea & the cause and the site is designed & laid out such that I'm not thinking that a charity drive has spent too much. Good balance.
If I were designigning this site though I would have experimented with the idea of putting much more explanation on the home page and the race on a dedicated page with a progress summary on the header. I'm not sure that this would have been the best way, which is why I say experimented, but the only reason I stayed on your site for more than ten seconds is because I was reviewing it. I did not get the prupose of the site very quickly and ordinarily that would cause me to click the back button.
Cheers
John

Hi sorry about the delay, in google chrome the click here is fused in with the previous word they just overlap slightly, when i checked it again in a couple of other browsers there was no issue for me just in Chrome.

Hi Tony,
Many thanks for the screen shot, should have it sorted now. Could you be as kind as to re-check it on your google chrome browser?
Also you mentioned about some other parts not making sense - can you point out these parts?
Many thanks

@Beta2B - many thanks for your insight.
I am getting the info text changed on the front page header - what kind of info would you be looking for as a viewer as only have a small area to pu the info text?
many thanks

I'm going to go back a little on what I said originally. I would not have the race on the home page at all. I would make a home page which fits so that the user doesn't have to scroll at all. I would then make the largest part of that be text and images that very quickly & clearly explain the purpose & goals of the site to the user and the rest would offer links to other features of the site.
My thinking is that the user needs to know immediately what the purpose of the site is. If they don't they will not stay. For this reason it is much more important to initially focus on keeping the user on the site than it is to get them to participate. I don't think that there would be many if any people who would mind seeing that and then clicking on a link that takes them to the race. Additional to that I would put a small summary at the top showing the progress of the race.
I appreciate that this means a lot of work on your part, but if you look at it from the user point of view what they see when they land on your site is a very large graphic which means nothing to them until they have toured the site a bit. This will cost you dearly.
Cheers
John
