Hi Neil,

As somebody in the process of starting up a business I can see that this is a service that I would love to have. I can invisage a problem though; as a start up business I do not have a budget for anything that I may be able to do myself. I am aware I would not be able to do this as well as a professional however it is not something I would currently spend my budget on. Whilst I would love to have this service I would deem it as a luxury at the moment!

I have paid students, for copy, by the hour and being stingy, only just above minimum wage!

I think you could charge £150 a day (minimum) for good copywriting although I think you should target mid size companies - Smaller businesses are more likely to do their own, I would have thought.

it's going to be difficult, but do build a portfolio first. then a web site where you can display your portfolio. if you're into business writing, the trick is setting the right price that would not turn off possible customers but will not make them think that you're some cheap hack either.

Good idea on wanting to write content, there is allot of demand for this, but the most important thing is getting your name out there.

There are lots of people from India offering cost effective services for people who want to have content written for them, be it a press release or writing articles.

I would suggest starting a website where people can buy your services and finding a solid forum or two, and get to know people and offer to help them.

Content generation is a very personal business.

You should put your feelers out on Elance.com and freelancewriting.com

I'm not sure if you can see what contract bids go for if you aren't awarded the contract but you can get a pretty good idea here. You'll also notice that a lot of businesses without thinking about the consequences look for the cheap of the cheap.. don't fret about losing any business to them - they're not your caliber of client and would likely be a p.i.t.a. to deal with.

Trying the freelance websites is good to have an idea, but you will quickly see that there is a lot of competition in that field, especially on those websites.
You might be better of trying to make some partnerships with website design companies.
This is something I am looking for quite often as I create websites for my clients. Having a good looking website with a bad content is useless. It is especially interesting if you know SEO and you are good at doing research on the competition.
