This is almost a bit like a dragons den venture only with out the cash investment because you invest with technology.

Personally not sure i would invite somebody in to my company like that, but then again i wouldn't go on dragons den to give away half of my company either.

How does it work do you just simply build and supply the technology and then that is it? or do you provide on going support, updates, new developments and changes?

The later of the two could be exhaustive i run several online businesses and as a designer and developer i run continual development programs so that our online services are constantly being refeshed, updated and better positioning themselves with in the marketplace.

So where would your involvement end? and how would you decide on the amount of shares to cover the work you do.

I would never give a % of my business for something like that. I would want cold hard cash investment. I know I am not alone in that train of though either. If someone is not willing to risk investing their own money on their business and essentially cut corners like that, you will probably of wasted the most important thing of all. TIME.

There's definitely a market for this kind of thing - most enquiries and ads looking for web designers in the "great for portfolio" vein, or the "cut of the profits" type. We tend to avoid those kinds of jobs - especially the "Great Idea!" ones which need a lot of development...

Not that we don't do portfolio building or free dev for a cut of the business, but it's important to retain as much control over the project as possible. Get all copy or notes upfront, images etc and don't let them change or suggest anything until it's live and Googleable. If it's free, it's take it or leave it!

The problem is, is while there are lots of genuine great ideas for making money by potentially hardworking people with genuinely no money to invest, it's up to you to decide that, rather than just assuming as we tend to do that paying customers are serious.

It can work, but you're not just a web dev then, you're now an active member of the business. If they don't do their end and make it work, your hard work is worthless.

I am planning to launch a website in the autumn. I have agreed to pay the developer the initial costs to launch it (approx. £2000). It is my 'baby' and I'm very passionate about it, so I'm happy to spend money launching it. I know the developer and although not a close friend, I trust him. I also know that depending on feedback we get from future users I will want to make changes to the site, but I won't initially have the money to pay for lots of further development. So I've proposed to the developer that if the site proves popular (in which case raising advertising revenue will be possible), then I'm prepared to offer him equity in return for continued 'free' development.

So in answer to GeorgeL's enquiry, as a non-technie with an idea, I would be interested in the idea (that's what I'm doing!). But it would have to be someone I trusted, who was at least enthusiastic about my idea, if not as passionate as me. It would be hard to find someone like that, I feel the fact that I have is more a matter of luck than judgement. How would you match people up to create that bond?

But as to how much equity, dividends or shares are offered in return for development work, as Tony says, this will be hard to decide.

Specifically your business idea is good for start-ups who are eager to keep their initial costs low and who want to deploy a prototype to test their business model and revenue concept. I would, perhaps pitch your business at this very market with several out of the box solutions that you can clearly demonstrate and a portfolio of business' that you have assited to profitability.

Well this is a good idea however it brings so many other questions. How you will determine the possible success of your clients? What if the client's business idea is a dead-end? Would you still be designing and developing their website? Will you have certain requirements?

Its nice idea to start with the zero input from the client, or a surety of money back guarantee. This will motivate everyone to get connected to you and at least start with certain terms and conditions. Later at certain milestone payments can be discussed and released on the basis of the quality level of the product.

I think you need to decide if you're in business or an investor. I wouldn't mix the two as your objectives and relationships are different.

You could offer web sites on a subscription basis rather than a one-off fee.
