Good Mornin Folks
I am interested in purchasing a forum for an idea I have in the pipeline, unfortuantely I dont have an idea about purchasing one.
Now is it as easy as purchasing the template and adjusting it to my taste then uploading it like I have done with my own website? Or is there alot more involved?
I would be looking for a design like the one below:
www.djsunited.co.uk - sorry its not a plug I just love the design.
I would appreciate any info on this.

You can download and customise your forums without the need of purchasing one. All you will need, in most cases, is a SQL database and hosting that allows php.
www.phpbb.com is a nice forum to work with. An example of this forum and how it has been customised can be seen at www.thebarmanager.com/forum
If you need further help with this, let me know would be happy to help.
regards

Interesting you should ssay that frankie, I'm currently looking for forum or directory software that would be useable on a mac and one that I could fully edit, add advertising and have full control over. If anyone who is using or knows of any software that would be suitable could point me in the right direction that would be great.
Am I right in saying that the phpbb.com one doesn't let you have your own advertising or profit from advertising?
all the best

if you knew how to you can add your own advertising code to the forum, or pay someone else to add it for you.

With regards to the advertising and profit side of things that would be the kind of thing im looking for a bit down the line, so if thats the case the free download templates wouldnt be any good unless you were good at the coding side of things, and of course it's important to have full control over the forum. Mmmm back to the drawing board.

with phpbb.com you get the software and can customise the coding yourself if you are familiar with php/html. you can add your own advertising with google adwords for example.
if you need help feel free to ask, be happy to point you in the right direction

Forum installation and set-up is very easy, you can get downloaded and customize it as per your requirement. You could check with Phpbb, its good forum software for new start-up and available in opensource.

Just to go with the comments made so far - the main players in the forum industry are phpbb.com, vbulletin.com and invisionboard.com
All allow you to customise but you will need some degree of knowledge in order to add on advertising code etc. Depending on exactly what modifications you want to make, it is pretty easy.
Perhaps a web development site would be more helpful for you in this case. I would recommend http://www.sitepoint.com - if you ever need help with technical stuff or with coding etc, you will always get help from the forum users there.
