Web design

Hi, I am starting up a web design business with my son.
The business model is to offer a free design and setup for a basic site, where the customer pays a few pounds a month for the hosting. The host then pays us for the intoduction. I am planning that this will be a loss leader where the customer then pays for additional services, perhaps a monthly fee for management or as the business grows they opt for a more sophisticated design and package.
It has been relatively easy to pick up business this way but where do we draw the line between a basic site and adding in specilaiswd scripts which enhance the site.`
I would be very interested to hear whether businesses generally post their site and never touch it again or pay a subscription for monthly maintenance. What kind of fees are paid monthly for maintenance and what are the usual charges for addition of non standad features.

Hi,
We find that it is pretty much a 50 - 50 split across our client base. We certainly prefer the ones which take out a maintenace contract though
The monthly fees can range from as little as £95 per month right the way up to £1000 depending on what work ongoing they require.
Best regards,
Alexis.

You can have different packages, with the basic package as something like 5 HTML-only pages, and then charge for every extra pages. A reasonable monthly maintenance would be good, as business owners from time to time may want to update their sites with their latest promotions and events, and they themselves may not have the abilities or knowledge to do it.
