I am thinking of starting a vehicle leasing company part time (evenings & weekends) and already have the necessary to start (ie. pc, printer, phone, software, internet etc) but I am wondering what is the best and most popular route that existing established vehicle leasing/contract hire companies use to source the vehicles they lease/hire out. I understand the mechanics of the whole system as in prices, quotations, etc but just not sure where or how to approach a supplier of the actual vehicles to get deals done to lease out.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Matt

Hi Matt,
(please forgive the following words)
how can you be thinking of starting a leasing business and have quotes etc sorted if you haven't actually sourced the cars??????? That is the best question I have ever seen!!!!
Please do not take this personally it just makes me laugh that you can do all the bits except source the things you business is based around!!!!
Cheers

Martin,
Thankyou for your useless reply which is of no help whatsoever... I was under the impression this forum was to aid others, not ridicule.
if you care to read my message properly, you will see I only said that I UNDERSTAND the process of quoting, I didn't say I had quotes sorted as you seemed to think, but the whole point of my message was to see WHERE is best to source vehicles from - either a dealer or direct from the manufacturer.
Does any one else have any USEFUL comments?
Thanks
Matt

Hi Martin,
one method would be to buy a franchise from a major broker and you would be equipped with laptop & quotation system. I think one advertise theirs at about £13k. Some may give telephone quotes and many will have special deals on their web sites, quoting prices that you may be able to use once registered with them. Reading any of them would show they source from manufacturers & dealers, something you may or may not be able to do.

Matt,
I see your point but please see mine, ready:-
I have a laptop, printer, telepone, fax, everything to start a business, what shall I do? Start a budget airline? anyone know where I get planes from?
I have a laptop, printer, telepone, fax, everything to start a business, what shall I do? Start a sports shop? anyone know where I get sports suppliers from?
I have a laptop, printer, telepone, fax, everything to start a business, what shall I do? Start a web design business? anyone know where I get web templates from?
I have a laptop, printer, telepone, fax, everything to start a business, what shall I do? Start a mobile telephone company? anyone know where I get mobile phones from?
What I am trying to say is that just because you have those things doesn't mean you can start a business, you are 80% of the way there in identifying what you want to do and asking for help, but not all the way.
As for ridicule, if you cannot deal with a simple statement from some nutter on the internet then you'd better wise up, when you run a business the amount of ridicule / crap you will get will put mine into perspective.
Good luck in working out which is best for you.
Martin

Martin,
Starting a vehicle leasing company is not the same as starting a company selling football shorts or mobile phones. I believe it to be a tad more involved and if I were to start up, vehicle leasing is what I am interested in, not sports supplies, mobile phones or anything you have decided to list for some reason.
I know I am only 80% of the way there and that is precisely WHY I have asked for help, if you want to read my original post again, you should see that I never stated I could start a business up here and now which is what you seem to think in your last reply.
I also don't believe I need to wise up due to the fact that I am more than happy to take as much ridicule from any nutter (as you wisely identify) once I am trading but making that initial step to start is not aided by useless comments and put downs. Hardly encouragement now is it?!
Mark,
Many thanks for your comments. I'll have a check around and see what is about. I have seen one franchise for around £10k but I'd quite like to see what I can find out about how involved it could become, should I decide to start up alone, rather than on the back of someone else.
Again, thanks very much for your help - much appreciated.

I think what was been said was normally when starting a business you normally know the market including suppliers etc before even thinking about funding etc (I don’t know what stage you are at!).
What I am trying to say is that normally when somebody says I am starting a business X where can I buy Y normally indicates that the required research etc has not been properly carried out….. I to have been guilty of this!
May I suggest in the future you say some thing like “ I am currently researching the car leasing market I would be most grateful for any leads into car manufactures and dealers etc” . Find potential suppliers, market segments and possibly potential clients before mentioning your starting a business and you will find people will generally show more interest.
Are you renting or leasing. Leasing carries more risk and can take a lot longer to reach your break even point (esp. if it includes repayment of loan’s for the cars). How are you funding the cars?
