Two thirds of the population hold aspirations of becoming their own boss, it has been revealed.
The most entrepreneurial age group is 25-34, according to the poll by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) – three quarters of that generation want to run their own company.
The survey also revealed an inherent respect and admiration for small businesses among the British population. Some 96% of respondents said small firms played a vital role within the community.
“It is wonderful to see that people have such a high regard for the role SMEs play within the community,” said Glenn Collins, head of business advisory services for ACCA.
“Running a business is seriously hard work and requires skill, dedication and drive. It is hugely encouraging that so many respondents – especially so many young people – aspire to be their own boss. This entrepreneurial attitude bodes extremely well for the next generation of business leaders.”
A fifth of those surveyed said their dream business would be to own their own retail operation.
The research also revealed that the recession has had little impact on people’s entrepreneurial aspirations. Nearly a third believes there is actually more opportunity to start a business in today’s economic climate.
