The Social Enterprise Coalition (SEC) is the UK’s national body for social enterprise. A membership organisation, the Coalition lobbies government and works with banks, financial institutions and legal bodies on behalf of businesses with a primarily social or environmental objective.
In 2001, SEC’s former chair Baroness Glenys Thornton, called a meeting with what would later become the founding members of the Coalition to formally discuss the idea of creating a national voice for social enterprises and entrepreneurs.
The following year the Coalition was officially formed, Jonathan Bland was named first chief executive of the organisation and a team of staff were recruited.
Since being formed the Coalition has influenced government policy by contributing to reports and research. It also runs the annual Enterprising Solution Awards, which recognise excellence in social enterprise ventures.
In 2007, the Coalition launched the Social Enterprise Ambassadors programme which was funded by the Office of the Third Sector. The programme consists of 30 social entrepreneurs including John Bird, Tim Campbell and Penny Newman whose job it is to raise awareness of social enterprise.
