I have used this method for a while now and it's brilliant if you've got a contract phone with unlimited texts.
I text businesses the following...
"Hi, it's www.webwhites.co.uk - websites from £99 - SEO from £99, for more info, please visit our website or call 08000 786 856."
I tend to text 100 businesses per day, recieve approximately 10% in replies; most are negative but that 1% - 2% lead to a sale, meaning my phone bill is paid for the month + profit!

Im just finishing off a product similar to Impress Marketeers product, but based around SMS messages (and MMS).
Im sure the whole text service has been available for quite a while in the UK. I wrote an API for a system about 8 years ago.
If you can find a market then the profit margins are great :-)

There's load of companies offering an SMS service, where the user has to upload a list of mobile phone numbers of their existing clients. Whilst this is good for repeat business it does not concentrate on expanding its customer base - that's why I setup EnviroTxt to specialise in 'sending out text messages to your potential customers'.
