RE: Starting an online business?? creating the site?

If you're confident that you can build your own site and maintain it then it is the most cost effective direction.
However, a web developer, like us, employs professional designers and offer customer support. The cost of a website built by a developer these days is considerably less than a few years ago.
Have a look at our site, our website packages start from £300

Have you looked at open source solutions? Depending on what your site is about someone may already have done something similar you could tweak or pay a developer to tweak eg for ecoomerce Magento or Zen Cart or Oscommerce. There are lots of plugins for wordpress which change the usability of it enormously.
Also it is good to understand how your site works even if you did not code it and it is a good idea to own the code if someone else designs it in case you fall out and they hold you to ransom.
Finally it is also good to keep control of the domain and hosting so your site can't be stolen from under your nose. ie if your designer registers the domain on your behalf but uses their name and they host it on their servers if they then change passwords and say the site is theirs what have you got?

Contrary to what you said regarding hiring a web developer and then probably an SEO marketer, I believe it is more advantageous if you have little or not enough experience with it.
True. You may have to pay a bit for them but it is really worth it especially that it will boost the rankings of your site and then eventually your profit.
We've had clients who had similar dilemma as yours. Based on their testimonials, they have never been happier having entrusted their sites to our services especially that they are enjoying the boost in rankings, traffic and profits with their sites.

JohnDavidson - I would be very wary of using the services of an SEO company who's website has no address details and who's ownership is hidden by registering the domain through one of the proxy agencies.
My philosophy is that if you have gone to such lengths to hide who you are I presume that you actually have something to hide

I would recommend using a web design business, but then you would expect me to say that.
Nowadays, as with us, you can usually have a content management system which will allow you to keep your content up to date free of charge yourself.
We build your site, take care of the techy stuff as well as the design, then put in place a system to let you make changes to the content when you need e.g. upload new images, products and text.
Check out our site www.webfactore.co.uk or click the logo below.
In any case, if you want some free advice please feel free to drop us an email or give us a call and we will be happy to give you some no string advice.
Regards
Matt

I can only speak from my own experience. I have never used a professional web design company for any of my sites and I am currently at about 20 now. In the early days the plan was to conserve money as much as possible by buying a cheap DIY website builder and have a go at it myself. But I have fallen totally in love with the fact that I can very quickly make changes on a whim to any of my websites, and it doesn’t cost me a penny! The program is so easy to use, it doesn’t require any knowledge of HTML code writing, which suits me fine, it means I can focus on the design of the website and not get bogged down with all that techy stuff. From an SEO point of view I don’t feel at a disadvantage using my DIY website builder. I have achieved first page on Google for a few of my sites by just following the well published SEO rules to the letter.
