Starting-up a distribution business?

Hello everyone. I’ve been doing some light reading for some time here so it’s a pleasure to finally get registered and speak out loud.
I finally got to a point when I’m “ripe” enough to start a business, have an idea and am working on it. But I lack experience and knowledge in what I am about to do so I’m seeking an advice from anyone who is kind enough to give it to me.
I want to start importing a baby food from another EU member country and start distributing it. I am in touch with the people who are making it and we are talking about exclusive rights to distributing it in the UK. The product is AWESOME and is extremely high quality, it is natural AND organic but it is high in price (I still believe it will find its place in the market).
Now I have a few ideas on how I should proceed with introducing the product into the market but I don’t have any experience with such things. I would like to get an advice and thoughts from anyone who has experience or knows how it’s done. What makes this venture harder is my limited budget but I am sure that doing things smart I can make it.
So my goal is to get the products on to the biggest stores shelves and selling. Does anyone know how the retail market works and what is the profit margin for retail stores? If anyone can provide me with more ideas and strategies I’d really appreciate it. Thanks for any advice you are about to give.

I'd be wary of importing cosmetics/food stuffs from other countries. In principle, you would normally approach a wholesaler or distributor rather than a retailer.

If its for the legal issues then there everything is sorted. I talked to HMR&C, food standards agency and department of health so everything is sorted. Its EU anyway and the makers of the product are certified and abide by all the rules.
