Small businesses are going green in increasing numbers, according to new research.
A new survey conducted on behalf of Alliance and Leicester Commercial Bank suggests that 80% of small businesses have made changes to improve their green credentials.
As well as helping the environment, green businesses cut their bills. Some 29% of those surveyed expect greening their business will lower their operating costs.
The environment agency supports this view, claiming that businesses can make savings of up to £1,000 per employee each year through basic energy efficiency.
Steve Jennings, director of business management and strategy at Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank said: “Our research highlights that many business owners are embracing the green cause. This is benefitting their business financially as well as reducing their carbon footprint.”
Some 55% of green businesses surveyed made sure all electrical equipment was turned off when not in use, while 51% invested in low energy light bulbs, and 30% said they cut down on heating and air conditioning usage. Around 19% upgraded old equipment to more energy efficient versions.
Jennings
continued: “With the economic downturn set to continue, businesses are looking at adopting new ways to reduce overheads and by incorporating a number of initiatives to save energy, considerable cost savings can be made.”
