Search engine marketing is different from search engine optimization. SEO optimization concentrates on gaining higher SEO rankings whereas SEO marketing concentrates on both Paid as well as Organic marketing options made available by search engines. SEO marketing is more focussed on business objectives of your website and can help you gain more traffic and clicks instantly.
Google adwords is one of the most effective Paid marketing techniques. It can help your website to gain more visibility under search engines.
Yahoo also offers similar feature which is known as Sponsored Search. However, there are certain tips which you must follow while promoting your business online through Google adwords or Yahoo's Sponsored Search.
Google team has issued some basic tips on how you can optimize your adwords for best performance. Please refer to

I tell you though the cost per click seem to be getting higher - I know being inventive and using longer tail phrases is the way to go - but imagine how expensive PPC will be in 2 years time.

Im not that happy with google adwords tbh,
Unless you put in a LOT! of money you wont get much for your money.
When you do get visitors. The likelyhood of turning that visitor into a customer is small as well.
I think paying 50p to well over £2 per click is over the top.
It may be cheaper just to advertise in the local press.
You may get more hits and they will be local people, So they may even be more inclined to sign up.
Then again, Also advertising on the side of your car/van is probably as effective.

PPC can be great but your campaigns have to be set up properly, if not then yes it can cost you more than you should be spending.
Local Press can be a good option but it depends on the business that you are trying to market, if your market is local then you need to run the PPC in specific ways to eliminate searches outside of the area.
I have never lost money or been disappointed by setting up a PPC campaign because I always ask myself is this a good way to market the products / services that I am trying to sell. I then set up the campaign / site etc. to make the very most of the money that I am spending.

The positive thing about PPC is that it's so measurable.
If you run traditional adds in print media is difficult to know how effective they really are.
because the feedback is so good from PPC you can adapt campaigns very quickly - It is really important that PPC campaigns are actively managed to get the something out of them.

PPC campaigns are only one small part of the picture. For a campaign to be effective it really does need to be planned out correctly and ran alongside traditional TTL campaigns. You have to be fully committed to make PPC campaigns work alone which swallows up a lot of money with little return.
A fully integrated campaign could look something like this. Remember though that this is always tailored to your company's specific requirements and current status.
1. Consistent press advertising: getting your brand out there and recognised by your target audience.
2. Printed brochures: keeping your brand 'under the nose' of your existing and prospective customer base.
3. Regular e-mail campaigns (including industry news, best practices, company news): again as above.
4. Optimized and well designed website: can be used as a call-to-action on your advertising, printed collateral and e-mailers.
5. PPC campaign: helping your site get hits through general web searches
What this does is attract a few people from each area and helps build relationships with existing clients as well as win new ones. It also builds your brand, which is very important. When your brand is recognised by someone who happens to click on your Google Ad, this all makes a purchase much more likely. A fully integrated campaign is much more effective than just one hit wonder, hit and miss campaigns. The secret is in the consistency, simple really.
On the point of not being able to monitor traditional advertising methods. Not true. It's very easy to monitor these as well via your call-to-actions. Using unique URLs and telephone numbers or by asking people to quote reference numbers, and treating them for doing so, all make traditional advertising easy to trace and monitor.
Hope that helps!

depends on what you are selling to be honest. If you are competing against big players or do not have something unique compared to others, PPC is not for you.
It certainly isn't a waste of money. However, when using adwords, the conversion to real sale needs to be considered. If you are getting lots of clicks but no business, then certainly isn't worth it.
