I have been sharing this idea all over the forums and I thought that I would share it here as well.
What I am going to describe here has had a huge impact on my SEO website search engine rankings in Google. When I started this approach in January of 2009 my site ranked in the first page of Google for about 20 keyword phrases. 14 months later it ranks on the first page of Google for over 80 keyword phrases.
Please read and tell me what you think!
Unless you have visited my blog you will have probably have never heard of Scratch My Back Marketing.
This method is basically about non spam approach to the backlinks building process.
Scratch My Back Marketing is a link building concept that involves the use of branding and advertising in the link building process. It requires that the backlink builder exchange useful content or comments in exchange for valuable Do Follow backlinks. It may also involve using videos. This may seem like common sense but most do not consider these to be part of link building.
The advantages of Scratch My Back Marketing can be huge for the website being linked too. Your link building comments, posts, and threads are certainly less likely to be removed if you add value and are not overly self promoting. An additional benefit is that in the process it might actually produce increased website traffic and business. Increasing business after all is the ultimate goal, right?
Think about this:Have you ever visited a site or blog from a comment that read "good article?" The answer is likely no. But it is possible that you might a website from someone who left a useful blog or forum comment. I think just about every ones will follow a link from a great comment at some point.
Also think about this:Have you ever done business with someone who left a comment that read "great post?" The answer again is likely no.
Yes, adding useful content and comments does take more time but those comments are not likely to be deleted so you are further ahead in the long run.

Thanks for the chuckle. I roared when I read this "It seems that you are fed up with this a lot." Yes, its true. For eight months in 09 I ended every blog post by requesting a 20 word comment to be considered for a link. That request was ignored. So I had a plugin created that requires a 150 character comment to be considered for a link. That didn't work either. Now they simply tell me how wonderful my blog is without ever commenting on the post.
That aside, I believe that I am still in business today because I embraced this concept.

Good call!
I wonder what the limitations on this system are? Have you found site this does not work as well on? I wonder if high pagerank and value sites, people out of your topic of interest, or unfriendly sites or bloggers will make the process more difficult.
How has it worked for you? My main question would be if you think the comments you've made bring initial traffic, from the site, beyond the benefit of a backlink?
Great concept, thanks for sharing!

Lots of good questions here. I have benefited in every way imaginable. Since I started promoting Scratch My Back Marketing traffic is up 41% this year. It has sparked new business inquiries and then there is the link development as well.
Let's say I go to a forum that is SEO related. I post a thread about SMBM. Then I comment on a link building thread or two. So while I was marketing SMBM I also picked up a bunch of links as well. The SMBM thread over time will produce a few dozen links as I respond to other commenters.
The concept is so different that people follow the links to check out my site. This eventually leads to inquiries. All the while, the forums and sites that I post on get useful content. And hopefully others will see the light and start adapting this approach, if they do, they will be glad that they did.
I have already seen a half dozen Tweets on Twitter about this approach so it is definitely a plus on many levels.

Great advice... thanks! It's nice to see another "yank" on here too!
Do you do this on social media as well (FB, Twitter, etc.)?
Have you encountered blogs which allow your comments up until the point where you include one with a link?
Do you suppose larger media sources, like times online or washington post, will apply to this method? Do they even have dofollow links? Will they just ban the comment with a link and allow the rest?
So many questions, such little time...

I think I might have come across your concept a couple of months ago, or maybe even before - I can't remember where though. The thing I like about it is that it is real and long-term not the spammy, short-term results that alot of marketers seem to be concerned about - they give the industry a bad name

It's fairly common knowledge that you can't really spam. You have to put some thought to it. 2 years ago, yes we do see a lot of those "great posts!" comments. Thankfully, they're now being moderated.
But I like the name. Scratch my back marketing. That's the first time I heard of it.

Yeah you're definitely on the right track there. Much better to engage with the blogosphere and exchange useful content, and you can even then participate in guest posts etc.
What's ironic in this thread are the "great post!" posts (see above)
As for social media, yes, good to get there too, as more and more people are trusting their peer's advice over search engines. Which is why google is looking into social search I guess.
