A techie colleague and I are starting a new business in offering the ability to set and manage up simple mobile-friendly web pages and produce QR codes for them - all from a mobile phone. We are looking for ideas for applications and markets, so if anyone has any thoughts...
You can see the service (currently in beta test) at
q-action.appspot.com
There are free accounts available, so please help yourself to one and let me know what you think.
This time next year I could be a millionaire!

Maybe something local based would be a decent idea but it already seems like you have mentioned this on your site.

Thanks. There is definitely going to be a need for sites to be small screen friendly. Q-Action is different to your design and host service in that the user creates their own site without our intervention. We have just introduced the ability to add photographs and backgrounds and at some point may give users the ability to select from a choice of style sheets.

Hi, QR is certainly only going to get bigger as more people become aware of what it actually is.
The technology itself is fairly established, yet the take up hasn't quite got there because companies who currently use it in their marketing aren't quite informing the public what it is, how easy it is to use; they've just kind of popped up all over the place!
By the way, to all looking at QR websites, thinking of starting one, already own one, I currently own some domains that are for sale, let me know if you're interested:
GigaQR.com
BetaQR.com
TeraQR.com
Benefits?
- easily brandable
- very short
- .com domain extension
- easy to remember
- will do very well in search
If interested, feel free to contact me at webmangogo@hotmail.co.uk, and if you want all three, I'll discount the price down.
Cheers

QR codes are already well established in Asia, but only now growing (exponentially) in Europe and the US. According to comcast 20 million Americans csanned a QR code in the last quarter of 2011 and according to Ofcom more than 50% of UK adults will own a smartphone this year.
QR codes have their (mostly techie) critics, often with a proprietary interest, but whatever their shortcomings, they are now the de facto standard.

I think its a good idea but I would struggle in finding a monetisation model for this. It might be worth partnering up with some design and web agencies. Maybe you can offer something proprietary as part of a bundle in their services.

Vincent

The Q-Action model is subscription based - the free account gives you two pages which may be enough for some users who just want an on-line business card or poster. We expect that most users can get what they want for £25 a year which is enough to run several mini-web sites, make an audio tour for a visitor location, or issue permanent on-line membership cards for a club or something. We haven't really thought of partnerships, but would be open to suggestions.

QR codes definitely seem to be coming a defacto standard and have been seeing more interesting uses for it. Not sure if it is one of those things that is really popular at the time being and will be replaced by the next big thing, time will tell.
On a different point we would like to know how you efforts are currently going.

Too early to say yet - the service is up and running but we are only just building demonstration pages etc. Certainly we have had a good reaction from most people, then a few luddites who say either they don't have a smart phone and have no intention of getting one, or geeks who say that QR codes can be generated free and seem to miss the point that it is the simplicity and functionality of the pages for the average non-techie user that is the USP.
Anyway, I'll keep this forum posted as we progress.
