Colchester based design agency with a London outlook
Tell us what your business does:
Puur is a creative, Colchester based design agency with a London outlook. Aiming to deliver simple, fresh and effective solutions to our clients whilst also simplifying and clarifying the world of visual/verbal identity.
Where did the idea for your business come from?
Basically Puur started from a need (I didn't want to keep commuting), but has grown into an answer... companies don't have to go to London now for London thinking.
They can now get the same results locally, but at an affordable price.
How did you know there was a market for it?
I did research into the local market, looking at studies done by local government and industry bodies. I also did an audit of the local industry landscape and just talked to a lot of people.
What were you doing before starting up?
I have been on both agency and client side of the design industry. Latterly I was the global design manager of HSBC Private Bank running an international design team.
Have you always wanted to run your own business?
I have always wanted the opportunity to set my own destiny, and have lately witnessed all my peers 'go it alone'. The short answer is 'yes'.
How did you raise the money?
So far, I have just used personal savings.
What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?
Our biggest challenge is getting new clients, having spent most of my working life in London, getting clients in my home town has been challenging. Also businesses today try and do everything for nothing, which sometimes is a false economy.
How much do you charge?
Puur charges an hourly rate which depends on the client and the project. The base rate is £42.00 per hour. We don't ever 'buy' work, we deliver smart solutions at affordable prices
What was your first big breakthrough?
Puur's first big breakthrough is still to come... we're only four weeks in. We have had a lot of little ones though!
What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
I would say the same thing that I say to my start-up clients, think about what you stand for and stick to it, know your audience and market to them and don't do all this in a vacuum, collaborate!
Where do you want to be in five years' time?
I would want Puur to be a small studio with an account person and another couple of designers. I want us to be a more credible answer for bigger companies
