I own a fairly small house that I want to convert into a backpackers hostel and currently in the process of drafting a business plan about running a Backpackers Hostel in Soweto (South Africa).
The house currently has 2 bedrooms, a bathroom with lounge and a kitchenette. Would be adding two bedrooms and a dining hall. Interested in introducing tours on bicycles, which will be on an hourly rental basis.
Please assist with some pointers that I should consider and what best suites backpackers with regards to the dorms, meals, bathroom and activities?

Hi Muzi,
Your hostel sounds like a great idea
In my late teens I travelled around the USA and had first hand experience (good and bad) with many different hostels. I will do my best to think back to that time and list the pros and cons.
My first suggestion is have separate dorms for men and women. I know commen sense right not always. Alot of hostels I came across had mixed dorms.
Serve breakfast as part of the nightly fee. One hostel that will stick in my head is one that served bagels and fresh fruit every morning. Offer a homecooked dinner at an extra charge.
Offer toothpaste, towels, bedding, and other toiletry items at a small charge.
Stock plenty of pamplets featuring activities that backpackers and tourists can do. Maybe try and strike up a deal with some of the providers for discounts and deals.
If you have the finances to buy a mini van you could run your own tours to places of interest or run it as a courtesy shuttle.
There are many things that can be done to increase your chances of becoming a popular hostel but most importantly is the treatment of your guests. Treat them as friends (all be it paying) that have come to visit. Courtesy and a friendly smile can go a long way
All the best,
Tamara
PS: I have a friend backpacking around Europe. I'm sure she can give me plenty more insights. Post back here if you would like more ideas.

Thanks for the insights Tamara,
With the lady dorms, is there something special that should be included? Is it advisable to create a theme around the hostels (I'm a big fan of Bob Marley & would like to adopt a Rastafari Look and Feel)?
Would you say it makes sense to offer mountain bikes on a rental basis for travellers wishing to explore Soweto with a Tour Guide accompanying them? I will outsource the services of a local tour operator for packaged tours within Soweto and the entire Gauteng.
My intended dining hall will offer meals to both travellers and the locals, would this be an ideal approuch or should I only cater for my guests?
What's regarded as an affordable rate per night in dollars?
Would definately appreciate more tips and if possible, get to communicate with your travelling mate.

Buy a lonely plant book on south africa and you will be able to see what the going rates are for the area - note why some hostels are popular and recommended. If you are a fan of Bob Marley I am sure you will always be happy so no worries on the smile front!! Good luck!!
