Hi, My name's annabella.
I have recently started a website called www.bedandfed.co.uk (a database of 'kitchen supper, bed and (simple) breakfasts' for £35pppn or less), but I have a problem:
Currently I am trying to build up a database of at least 200 members all over the country before I feel I can approach any newspaper to do a story - HOWEVER, the website at the moment is aimed at I think mainly housewives who want to make SOME money only SOME of the time without having to run a full time business (For example the members in Perthshire are the right kind of people and have understood the concept completely) but I am finding it impossible to get through to these people -Additionally people in cities, not necessarily housewives but really anyone with a spare room could take advantage of the website and make a lot of money. I know people like this are out there but it is very very difficult to get to them and I have little or no budget for advertising unfortunately.
It's a bit of a conundrum - like a weird logic puzzle - bit of a chicken and egg situation, but I wondered if anyone might have any bright ideas?? please do let me know - chiefchchick@bedandfed.co.uk I'd be so grateful!

Dear Annabella
Interesting Catch 22. situation. But possibly this is self-imposed. If you have little resource for advertising, then you have three possible options:
1. Public Relations - why have you imposed this 200 client/ members threshold? There's no need for it in my humble view. The topic of housing shortages, development of Green Belt Land, more single households etc is always bubbling up to the top of the press and broadcast news agenda somehow. AND you have a solution! I think you'll find that journalists won't care how many members you have and several would give serious consideration to featuring your story if presented reasonably well. I haven't done a lot of PR apart from a little on our Late Payment Tracker but I had nowhere near 200 new clients when I started exploiting this promotional tool. Maybe you could join a local network and find out if there's any PR experts who could help you on your way.
2. SEO optimisation - you need to get more visitiors to your site but you will need to get your website fully optimised for the 'phrases that pay' and then embark upon an off-site SEO programme of to help get your site in front of more of your target market.
3. Try telemarketing - why not buy some data which identifies domestic addresses and telephone numbers that you think would have proportionally more free rooms to rent and then call them! It's aggressive and intrusive so make sure the list is compliant with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS).
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Might I recommend a book?
Guerilla Marketing by Jay Conrad Levinson
ISBN: 978-0-618-78591-9
This book has been a great resource in forming marketing plans. Changed my life.
Other than that, I agree with John.
That book helped a lot in finding target markets. Perhaps it coult be as simple as finding many cheap marketing sources to consistently buy-into (a small, weekly paper ad; a modest Pay-Per-Click budget; a targeted yet consistent direct mail campaign; other options...)

I think its worth using online social media - it sounds like a fantastic concept and I think you could get alot of interest from Uk based social media sites and all online news syndicates - this could be a good way to test the market.

Any developments since we last talked? I'd love to hear success stories or lessons learned through blood spilled. Both are valuable if you percieve them as such.
Thanks!

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum. Keep up the good work.
Annabella,
Why don't you contact Workingmums.co.uk. As the name suggests, it's a network for working mums, but I suspect that the reason it's so successful is that a significant proportion of the women who log on are stay at home mums.
It has a section called "Work from home jobs", so perhaps they will find what you have to offer useful to their visitors.
