I have just set up a new website called Horrormovies4U at www.horrormovies4u.co.uk
As horror movies are my passion (well, they do say you should set up a business relating to what you are mad about, don't they?), I thought I would test the waters and, hopefully, if the site does well, I will be able to sign off the dole and become self-employed (it will probably take a while, though, to get thousands of customers, but then again, who knows?).
Anyway, I would love some comments and reviews on my new site (and don't worry, as I can take Cowell-like blunt talking!).
I would also be interested in hearing from any business people or writers who share my strong interest in the horror genre.
Thanks
The Webmaster

Doesn't anybody like horror movies anymore?

Well, whenever someone puts 4U in the name of their company, you know it's going to be cheap!
Unfortunately, that's not always a good thing. People usually want 'perceived value' by believing their buying something expensive for very little. That's what makes them happy.

My horror movies store www.horrormovies4u.co.uk has been up for quite a few weeks now, and despite a steady increase in traffic, I haven't made one single dvd sale from the site. All the dvds are Amazon affiliate links.
Can somebody please take a look at my site and give their opinion on why nobody is buying the dvds? I need to know, as I really want to make a success of my business, it being my main passion.
Thanks

First off well done for actually getting ur idea up and running respect. I no you must be a frustrated by the unhelpful comments aswell. Well I've just visited the site I get the idea of it being a horror movie website but feel the design is very ordinary dark and dull I'm not a fan of the green and red writing on the black background. Getting the website design correct is a must and needs freshening up people no if they are going to stay on a website in the first 10 secs or so. So getting the site to look fresh and easy to use is important. The second point is just the mindset of buyers I no your an acfiliate for amazon so if your getting visitors and they click on a DVD to buy and see it's from amazon they could just be opting out and going to buy it straight off amazon because people just feel more comfortable following a brand amazon is massive well known trusted that's just how peoples mind works even though your selling their item people may still be going straight to amazon to buy. Patient is key you are getting visitors and it's only been up a few weeks so give it time changing the website design could help massively check out netflix I love film etc see how their sites look. Try submitting articles to enzine etc putting in back links this can increase traffic and rankings and people can see your articles and the link will get them to your website. Just constructive criticism hope it helps and again well done don't give up you'll make it work. Hope you get more helpful comments

ok first black background is not good - it makes it hard to read and not good for the eyes, or your bounce rates! I know black goes with horror etc but consider changing the center section to light background and black round the outside perhaps.
Second Amazon pay 4-6% commission to affiliates usually and how much is an average DVD - £10-£20?? - thats about 40p-£1 per sale so you will need to sell a LOT of dvd's to make a good income.
If you need to earn say £500 per month you need to sell around 500 DVD's at the least (more if commission is less) and if it clicks through to amazon convert at say 3% (realistic for affiliate) then you need 16666 clicks from your website to amazon per month.
If your click through rate from your site to amazon is say 10% then you will need 166,660 traffic to your site each month to earn £500.
If I were you, if you are going down the affiliate route then I'd choose a niche that has higher priced items to have on your site so you need less sales and therefore traffic to earn the same amount and make sure the competition isn't too great either. Drill down into a niche.
Hope this helps

Hi. Thank you for your advice on my site www.horrormovies4u.co.uk. Your points were taken on board, and I will now start researching for a more profitable niche.
Yes, I agree that DVDs are very hard to earn a decent income from via affiliate links. The reason why I put up this site is because horror movies are a big passion of mine (well, they DO say you should build a business about something you're passionate about, don't they?), so I thought it would be great if I could earn a living doing something I enjoy. Still, never mind.
By the way, I do sell my own ebooks on Amazon Kindle (the True Ghost Stories series), and so far the sales have been very good, and are increasing all the time. So maybe I should have built a website around my talent as a self-published author of paranormal Kindle books. What do you all think?

Hi Kevhendry82. Thanks for your reply. Yes, you are right in saying you can only learn from your mistakes. After careful consideration, I have decided to scrap the horrormovies4u site and concentrate all my attention on my True Ghost Stories site, which is the top site on Google Search for the term "true ghost stories". I also sell my own Kindle books from this site, which are doing very well on Amazon, I am pleased to say! The more Kindle books I write and put on, the more my sales will increase and the more my name will become familiar to Kindle book buyers.
I did consider keeping the horror movies site going, but as one poster said on here, I would need to get thousands and thousands of visitors to make even £500 per month (not good at all). Instead, I will pursue other ideas.

Hey it sounds like you could really build on the kindle and ghost story site - few different avenues to take there too on top of your existing stuff that you can develop - prob lots of opportunity to sell advertising or for affiliate sales from things like haunted hotels, ghost hunts etc etc
Best of luck to you sir!

I have now scrapped the horror movies site, as it was a complete FLOP. Never even got one single affiliate sale.
I am now concentrating all my energies towards my main site, True Ghost Stories, from which I am selling my self-published Amazon Kindle books. I am pleased to say that my books sales are rising steadily on Amazon, and I have just published my own collection of horror stories, SHOCKERS, to see how that goes on.
Would love to eventually go self employed as a writer, although I would need to know if I could claim Working Tax Credit as an author capacity.
