Dear Reader,
I am having problems getting a merchant account. I tried barclays and streamline who basically said they couldn't help.
I haven't actually started trading yet!
Is there any aquiring banks that are compassionate with new start ups?
I did consider Worldpay and was quite impressed with their system, the only thing putting me off is the deffered payment cycle of 5 weeks, I need to pay tender and agents and can't find a way round this.
I though about Paypal but am worried whether they would be suitable for high volume transactions, I do not want my customers to have to register and also the registration is unsuitable as I'll be taking payments via the telephone.
Then I heard about another service through a web hosting company but their credit card charges are 5.95% and debit cards 0.60p (if I don't host my site with them) and 4.95%/0.25p debit card (if I host with them)plus 10 pounds per month. I am also a bit wary as I haven't heard of anybody using them. I have also found a different web company who can provide me with everything I require with an attractive price plan without payment gate way ofcourse as they only work with Worldpay(which means I can't host with the other web designer company)
Please Help this topic is taking me round and round in circles and really frustrating me.
I look forward to your response.

Have you looked at Protx? http://www.protx.com/ I have never used them myself but they seem to be getting a lot of good feedback.

Yes, I have but you need a merchant ID from an aquiring bank. They do not offer a bureau service.

Hi Gary,
Had a quick look KWICK PAY actually have a lead time of 3 weeks aswell. They won't pay you within the week.
I did post on this forum earlier about whether anybody has had any dealings with paysystems as your customers don't have to register and your paid within the week.
Paypal I'm just worried about a)the registration process for customers to pay me, this may put them off and I can't take phone transactions. I've been told by someone you can take offline payments and customers do not have to register, but I"m not convinced as I've heard of nobody who's actually using the system without having to register their customers for an account.

Hi
There is a very good reason for banks and processors holding you money for a month, its all about chargebacks.
You will always receive a number of fraudulent transactions, often where a purchaser buys an item online, you send it out and then they ring visa and say "someone has used my card to buy something, give me my money back, it wasnt me"
VISA will refund the money and claim it back from the processor (worldpay, prrotx, whoever) and then want it back from you. To make sure they get it, they want to hold onto your money for as long as possible. It is then up to you to prove that they did purchase the item, hard if its online as you have no siganture, but a signed delivery note, etc can help... Then you have to counter claim te money back from VISA again.
Once you have established a trading history Worldpay will reduce your remittance period to 3 weeks and then down to about 2 weeks. At this point you can usually approach your bank and get a merchant id anyway and remttance will be only a few days...

Hi James,
This is one point I do not understand, I am selling insurance policies and will only accept payment by the policy holder which should avoid these chargebacks. The policy holder can pay by using his debit/credit card or cheque etc. S why do they have to hold money for so long? How can there be a problem with a person who owns a vehicle and purchases insurance cover for this vehicle using his own payment card?
There must be some way?

Hi
Obvioulsy you are in a lower risk category than someone who sells physical products or concert tickets, for instance.
However, when a payment is made in the cardholders absence there is always a chance of fraud and the payment processors know this. Of course after a period of time, you will be able to demonstarte that you have made a large nuber of sales and had no problems and they will then tkae steps to reduce the remittance period.
Your business bank may understand your business and the risk levels better and be able to offer you a merchant account directly. Otherwise im afraid there is alittle option. No doubt the processors make revenue from holding your funds for a few weeks and not only would they lose this but it would also be expensive to assess each case on an individual basis, hence the standard remittance terms for all businesses without a trading history.

James

I can put you in contact with a good company. They process US $'s and £ Sterling, 4.95% plus £0.60 - £0.75 per transaction. They pay weekly by check or wire and have a rolling reserve of about 8% wich is typical in the industry. They dont credit score or charge any setup fees or monthly fees.
The process: VISA, Mastercard, American Exprees, Diners and they will process Switch, Solo and VISA Delta (possible Electron - Im not sure) by the end of October.
Email me at simon@hardwiredesign.com and ill refer you.
The reason Im doing it that way is that I get a small kick back for each application, I also process through them myself.

You are right about the justifications though some of it seems quite unjustified and can be particularly difficult for small businesses. I use Worldpay myself and have done for over a year now. The deferred period means that they are holding on to a large amounts of my customer payments for a while. To compound this, when the payment transfer is done, it take another 4 or so days through the bank clearing systems. This is quite heavy on the cashflow.
Would it not be more reasonable to hold onto a fixed amount? Particularly after reviewing the trading history? My bank would not set me up with a merchant account initially, but have recently agreed to review it if I submit a business plan and all my Worldpay statements over the last 6 months.
Incidentally, how long is it before Worldpay reduces the remittance period to 3 weeks and then 2 weeks?
It may be Faz, that you might want to start with something like Worldpay and then reapply to your bank after a while?

Hi Anne
You should contact Worldpay and negotiate a new lead time with them. If you have a good trading history with them they are flexible.

Thanks Gary, I did and WorldPay have been quick to reduce the remittance period to 2 weeks. I'm applying for a merchant account from the bank and hope to reduce this period further as well.
