Amazon don't have everything, they don't have some local food too, so I think this idea may work if op plan it well.

It depends on how you market it. I think you will need to invest quite heavily in the functionality and promotion of the site, if you are going to succeed. So then you have think about how big the market is and ascertain if the investment is financially feasible.

Sounds like it could be a successful idea, there is no way to say without doing some research. You should search around, see if you can find any companies doing similar things in different regions, and see how successful they are. You could also put together a survey to see how much interest there is for your service.
Make sure you are sure there is a strong target market before you invest too much time and money.
Good Luck!

This is great Idea but as other memeber UK_Virtual_Office told you have to do good marketing of you sites.because where you want to locate your business there's people should aware with your business.appart from internet marketing you have to do the advertise in local media also.because Internet marketing some times take more time. because it depens on your sites keywords and google's algorithm also.by the way Its a great idea.start working on this projects.

Hi,
Are you intending on working with the local companies on commission? If you partnered up with them and offered their products in one big 'local online store' then I think this could be a real success as it keeps your overheads low.
You could then place your orders with the local stores and collect all the required foods a couple of times a week and deliver straight out to the customers.
I would have thought local companies would be interested as it is likely to increase their trade.
This way the local shops are likely to want to help advertise your website too. Although I agree with the others that this may require a large investment in the marketing front, but I think the idea itself is great.
Sorry if this wasn't your intention...but certainly a possible route to go down?
Hope it's helpful
Thanks

Hi The only thing I would like to add to this idea, is to remember parking ticket costs as I believe most people totally forget the money grabbing regime that all local councils run, with the full backing of the Goverment. Most companies in this field employ staff just to contest tickets, if you dont believe me ,phone any of them.
best of luck

>The business would be called 'locals'
Hi, great idea and one that plays on the popular "farmers market" phenomenon. Maybe think again about the name and try to incorporate this high quality, organic produce, idea into the name? I would think that starting an online network and taking commission would be a good starting point, as ally1988 suggests. As ally1988 also suggests your basic marketing can be done at the businesses you serve, with you providing the transport.
Do not know if this helps, but I currently buy my vegetables via a service where you basically order a box. What is in the box depends on what the farmers have for sale that week, then you base the weeks menus around that. No plastic wrapped long-life stuff . The service appeals to me, as you never know what you will get
It perhaps has good marketing potential for you on the veggie front.

Hi, thanks for all of the responses. I think that I should change the name also as it doesnt show what the company does.
Furthermore, I like the idea of selling shops goods, but I dont want to be just a distributor as I could make more money. But, I think that the fact that they would advertise my business is really good especially when im just starting it up as I believe that getting a name will be the most difficult thing to do.
Thanks for al of the help and anymore would be much appreciated.
Edward

There's something similar (as far as I can gather) being done in North London: http://www.hubbubdeliveries.co.uk/
It might be worth checking out what they offer, or even trying to have a chat with them if you're not going to be in georgraphic competition.

your idea is great. But you will be encountering stiff competition with others. So, you need to put extra effort in advertising. Make sure that you'll be noticed by your target costumers. You can join online communities and social media's,create blogs and articles. Provide a customer support hotline, this will help you gain the trust of your customers.

I think this idea will be very dependent upon your local catchment area.
How many potential customers are there within a 10 or 25 mile radius? I think you're going to need some market research first before knowing if this idea will work for you.

As SBarnett says it will all rather depend on your local market.
Seems like a potentially workable idea to me though. Why not try starting off with just the products from one farm shop and targetting one geographical area.
Then the fulfilment is simple and the marketing can be a leaflet drop. Thus you can test the idea relatively cheaply and grow it once you establish if the demand is there.

@ edwards
This is really very interesting idea in my opinion. Even i look for any internet service when i feel hungry and don find time to go out for meal.
Only thing is you will have to take care of hygiene a and on-time delivery. There might come some problems like varieties of food and some people like to look and smell the food. These are some challenges that may arise.
Thanks

Hi Ed!
I think this is a good idea!
One thought: Have you seen the show "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares"? He advocated getting local food while it is in season and on sale. He touts that you can actually get inventory cheaper by buying local when using this method.
As with every post I make on this forum, I'll ask if you have thought about marketing this service?
Product
Are you a farmers market which delivers, or are you a restaurant which delivers? Or are you a delivery service for existing restaurants or grocery stores?
Target Market
Who will buy? I suspect: People with expensive homes in progressive areas of town. Young, wealthy, health-conscious adults would be my guess.
Strategy
To start, if you can keep costs at a normal market rate, the fact that food is local will drive success to you. Aside, find customers as they are leaving work because everyone needs to eat dinner.
Marketing Tools
Discounts: Offer it cheap to get them hooked and move inventory at less-than-peak demand times. Web Marketing: access a market which is specifically looking for your service. Seminars: Teach others how to select and cook local favorites for free.
Just my thoughts!
Happy hunting!!
Edit: First, first, first... find competitors. They'll tell you what people expect and how to be better than "The Jones'"

Hey Edwards,
I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to comment that organic produce delivery is a great business to be part of, you can really make a difference and you are doing something that matters to people! Have you decided to start one?
RE: Local Food delivery
Hi Edwards,
I think this is a great idea...
I'm with wkiva above, Organic produce would be the way forward here.
You should also look into Franchising your Idea ? Imagine if you had a Locals in most towns of the UK?
