Local Computer Repair Company

Hi guys,
for the last 5 years i have both studied and worked within the computer industry,
however i am looking at setting up with a partner offering computer sales, repair and maintenance.
would be looking initially starting the business from home providing a call out service, no fix no fee.
Have seen various companies online providing basic business name registrations for free when taking a barclays account,
https://www.theformationscompany.com/
Anyone used a similar company, or setup a similar business, any known suppliers or advice would be great,
Also not so sure how the whole business rates and vat works, hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction
Thanks In advance
Shane

Hello
Starting your own business can be great as long as it's been done right. If I was you I would start as a sole trader with a business name not as a ltd company then all you need to do is register as self employed with HMRC and complete a self assessment every year and pay your taxes.
As with V.A.T. you will need to register for V.A.T. If your turn over is over £70,000 if you can see your comapny is going to turn over more than that £70,000 you can register with HMRC.

the computer repair and maintenance market is pretty saturated so as a previous post said, you do need to be good at it to succeed.
business rates...if your in england or wales, then you'll probably have to pay them. its based on what they term the ratable value of the property your in. for a little shop expect to pay maybe £100 a month to the council. If your in scotland then if its a little shop or office your going for, id expect you to not have to pay as you get a small business discount on business rates for properties with a rateable of below 10K i think??.
VAT. if your working out of your house, then dont bother registering for a start as it will probably be a while till you can hit 70k a year turnover. theres also a few different ways of calculating vat, and it would be best if you spoke to an accountant about this. infact, go find yourself an accountant first of all, he should be able to setup the ltd company and tell you about shares, vat etc.
good luck!
