Hi, my business is in the very early growth stage, and we sell a plumbing product that is of particular use to housing authorities/councils etc...
However, sales are slow...
An acquaintance, with expertise in marketing/sales/running businesses has taken a look at my company and has suggested that my sales technique is lacking - or even in some cases damaging! Mainly because i am new to this, and have developed the product from scratch and so can be over-sensitive to criticism!
He has suggested investing in a 'lead generation specialist firm'. Apparently - for a fee - they buy in the necessary contacts database and hammer it with professional salespersons on your behalf, generating interest, meetings and sales! They are basically fancy telemarketing companies - but with headhunted, professional salespersons - not 16 year old temps!
I have researched the company he suggested i look into, and their client list and testimonials certainly sound impressive...
Has anyone used a company of this sort? Was it worth it? Should I invest my remaining meagre resources into them?
Speculate...to accumulate?

A tough one. We too considered this too.
The main problem is knowing how the sales team are being with your clients. In the past we've found sales people will tend to say what's needed for the sale and the delivery can be a problem.
Maybe get someone in house?
On a side note, just took a quick look at your site, the content is good but I think it would work much better for you in terms on conversions with a redesign.
If you think you might be interested please feel free to call on 0845 86 20 353 and ask for matt.

A different way to go is to make the most of your site - you get the leads direct from your site - they are high quality and definitely interested in your service.
SEO - Search Engine Optimisation does this - it make you appear high up in Google searches.
It's much cheaper than hiring a sales team and has longer lasting effects.

Thanks for the advice guys...
I have tarted up the website somewhat...please check it out...always happy to have feedback! (www.icevalve.com)
We have tried SEO, but my product is very much aimed at a winter period - individual, end-users are simply not worried about the problem that our gadget solves at this time of year and as such, aren't searching for us...
however,
We are targeting bigger fish - such as housing associations and councils, who have 1000's of properties on their books, and it makes sense for them to fit our product now, to relieve resources during the busy winter period...it is these such organisations that I am debating wether to try and infiltrate myself - or to invest in a Lead generation firm.
My musings shall continue....

- That site is terrible. Get someone to install Wordpress for you with a (free) nice looking, appropriate template and logo. It's the simplest way to get something pro-looking online, which you can then edit yourself.
- There aren't a huge number of councils and housing associations in the UK. Perhaps if you hire someone intelligent to sit by a PC and make calls on your behalf?
First you narrow down the department and job title you need to contact ...

WordPress is easy to install and work with. There are lots free and premium theme available. Even with a basic knowledge, it should be possible for you to get it up and running.

"Perhaps if you hire someone intelligent"
There are 2200+ housing associations and local authorities in the UK, I have since acquired a database of all heads of maintenance and their procurement, and their contact details...I was sceptical of it's accuracy...but, to my delight, I am now speaking to the right people, first time.
I have since set up 4 meetings with said contacts, and have another 6 getting back to me with dates...not a bad start (2 days)....yes I've had a few knock backs - but I guess everyone's busy.
So, in summary, my advice to myself is:
Get a contacts database
Deep breath
Pick up the phone
Get your own leads
Save ££££'s
Nice one.

I'm glad that you posted the positive result of your hard work. Well done. Picking up the phone is gutsy.
You might want to consider sending a letter before your phone call to help warm up the leads a bit.

Well done, Mr Dalby. Sounds like you have what they want; all you needed was the contact list. Quite inspiring.

Why not look for other persons who have cheaper charge but excellent work?Try reading books that you can relate your problem. You can even surf the internet to look for possible options.
