RE: Flash and SEO

That flash content is not-searchable was indeed true till sometime back but now that Google is able to index the text content inside flash, including the buttons, we have seen that our clients' flash websites are getting reasonable rankings. Which is an icing on the cake because search engine optimisation was nowhere in the picture when these sites were designed. Here is some more info from the horse's mouth - http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/06/improved-flash-indexing.html

Flash and SEO – Using Flash on Websites
Flash movies can be a great thing. They can help catch eyes that are otherwise bored with static looking pages, and they can help tell a story better than plain text. However the use of flash must be tempered with the ability to rank in search engines. This article describes some of the considerations and recommendations when using flash on a website.

GarySEO786; yes, when folks use full blown Flash websites and choose to ignore the importance of SEO - but not when used to help conversion. Mere static text and images; just don't cut it any more.
We live in a visual World.
And with the popularity of video; this is providing another way to strengthen ones traffic generation and conversion. Please spend the time to read a recent article I published:

I'm afraid that many contributors aren't here to pass on information or help others but simply to drop as many signature links as they can in the hope that it will help their search engine rankings.
I will shortly clean up this thread by deleting all of the replies from the "usual suspects"

I would like to add my 2 pence! I would suggest not building a full flash site, why? because although your maybe able to "SEO" it, you have to think about customer conversions, and that counts on them having flash installed, being patient for content loading up and not being in a work environment so sound doesn't cause a problem! I would suggest maybe using flash elements to enhance call to actions for examples, but stay away from a full flash site for the time being until the world catches up, remember some people are still browsing on dial up with IE5!

While yes, Flash is now indexable by Google, but only to a limited degree. What is more, flash makes it difficult for you to actually test out your content and update it in the future, unless you want to spend a lot of time on creating a flash site every single month or when the time comes that you need to update things.

Hi Elizazile,
Many thanks for your response, just a few questions:
1. How far does this "limited degree" go - do you know this limit?
2. Can you explain "test out your content"?
3. Time to update - you should sack your existing Flash Developer/Designer. And find one that uses XML files. XML files, are very easy to update - and can be edited in text editors such as Notepad. An XML file can be updated much quicker than a HTML file.
Elizazile, thanks for your feedback; I hope that my response is also a positive one.
Have a great day.
Kind Regards,
Voiceswf

I agree with Elizile. It will be difficult for you to constantly change your site if it's made in flash, unlike say in an ordinary HTML.
Voiceswf: Can anybody be really sure about the limits put on by Google? I think even the best SEO experts can only guess as to what Google indexes or not. My experience, however, showed that the same page done in flash and another in html. Same content, one was hosted in keyword.tv (flash) and keyword.net (html) both were indexed, but keyword.net was 2 ranks higher than keyword.tv
Haven't bothered with flash since

thanks for sharing that experience with us. i favor flash pages though because of the sleekness of its appearance, and with google's promise that it will do its best to properly index flash pages, then all the more am i gonna devote time to it.
why not have two versions of your website?
