Hello again
I have been working on a new website for the past few months aimed at parents and parents to be of kids up to age 5.
A part of this new site "Simply-Kids.co.uk" will be sales of goods
I have decided to test the water and build upa a small database of contact by selling kids cloting on e-bay.
It is a shock to see so much of the same type of stock available on e-bay. With the fees paid both to e-bay and Paypal, you dont stand to make a vast profit, this profit is eroded again when you need to re list an item
The idea will be to use e-bay as a way of marketing the new site in time
Does anyone here sell on e-bay. do you have the same problems with markup?
I dont go for big mark ups on my items, maybe a £1, what do other people aim for ?
Thanks

HI
I have a store on Ebay, my attitude is (concerning clothes retail in particular) that if you want to make your business from it then you have to really go for it and sell in big amounts. Problem is alot of sellers get their stock from the same wholesalers so that makes things harder, so you either have to offer something extra ie fantastic customer service, fast postages etc, or you have to look harder for more original stock, something the others haven't got.
I would guess the majority of sellers who buy from uk wholesalers only make approx £2-4 profit per item , (kids clothes sellers). But it is a really good way to advertise, you can put business cards in with every sale, so if you only want to use Ebay as a marketing tool for your own web site i would go for it. Remember in your auction templates you can put your own URL in as a header etc.
If you ever need help just email me, i've had my store for around 1 year now and nearly have 1000 totally +ve feedback. It is possible to earn OK money from Ebay, it's hard work but it can be done!!
Take care, merry christmas liz.

Hi
Until recently I sold SatNav units and accesories on Ebay, and did make some good markups. An example was a mounting plate I brought for 4 pounds and sold for 10. Despite shifting around 100 items per month part time, it didn't make enough profit to justify the time I spent on it. I also found it to be very cut throat in terms of people selling the same thing cutting their prices by a pound just to get the sale. When you factor in Ebay and Paypal fees it simply wasn't worth it. I honestly believe that if you make a 1 pound mark up per item it simply won't work.
Stuff that most people think of as junk tends to make the most money on Ebay. I found when someone dumped 2 televisions outside my house, after trying them out and cleaning them up sold them for 40 pounds each. Also the speedometer I picked out of a skip went for 30 quid. One guy brought a BMW 5 series MOT failure for around 200 pounds, and put the leather interior on ebay and got a thousand.
This concept could be applied to baby clothes. We have a 22 month old and a 9 month old baby and our kids grow out of clothes very quickly. We just gave away a huge bag of baby clothes in good condition ie not stained or torn to friends. I woul dhav happily given them to someone like you, I'm sure I am not alone. I think you need to work on getting good quality second and stuff for nothing.
I hope this helps
Jonathan

Some people hate Ebay, some love it. I love it personally! It has given me the chance to give my business idea a run and see how it goes without spending lots of money on web sites and marketing. However prices are much lower than you could acheive on your own web site, so thats the down side.
I intend to run my business soley on Ebay and in a much larger scale later next year, but finding a supplier has been hard, and i have had to find a niche market within Ebay and i have stuck to it.
One of the highest selling stores upon Ebay, run by a father and son set-up sell over £100,000 per month and they sell items that are all under £5 per item! Alot of work but they make a fortune and pay nothing for marketing at all, (down side they pay alot of Ebay fees!).
As many things in life it takes alot of work, alot of time, but if it's something you enjoy and you have the drive in you then go for it, i am!
