Thought it might be worth a separate thread on this one.
A number of rogue domain name registration agents are still operating that nasty (but effective) scam of telephoning domain name owners to say that they've received a request from somebody to register domains very similar to theirs.
They say that they wanted to advise you before they register the names for this third party and imply that they're looking after your interests. This is complete BS and you should ask them for the details of the person / organisation seeking to register the names so that you can contact them directly - which almost certainly they won't have or will claim that they're confidential.
Thank them for their call but on no account register names with these companies.
If they offer you UK domain names - .co.uk, .org.uk or .ltd.uk - report them to Nominet (www.nominet.org.uk)
Let's try to put these companies out of business. They're preying on innocent companies and frequently charging a fortune for names which you definitely don't need.
One final and unrelated thing - aren't the DHTML layer popup ads on this website REALLY annoying!

What pop up ads - I didn't know that there were any. You obviously aren't using Zone Alarm Pro which kills them all.
I was telephoned by the scammers (although I didn't know that's what they were) who told me that they had clients who wanted to register the .biz and .info versions of my website but they offered them to me first. I can't remember the price but it was somewhere between £60 and £100.
On the first two occasions I said that I would think about it for 24 hours then immediately registered both the names myself with UK2 for a fraction of what they were offered to me at. I did the same the second time when it was .org that was offered but on the third occasion I told them that I didn't want the domain and that his client was welcome to it.

I meant to post a similar thread to this yesterday. I received a similar call suggesting I buy the domain names from them. They said that I would have 30 minutes to make a decision and should get back to them. I did the same as Ian above and bought the remaining names for a silly price, just in case and to avoid further calls in the future.
If I had the time, I would have rung back and said that I would buy the names from them just to wind them up!

Also, the other scam is domain name renewal notices from companies you didn't register the domain with in the first place.
Does anybody else get renewal notices from "Domain Registry of America" or other similar businesses telling you to renew your domain name with them, even though you have registered it with another company?
