does anybody have any idea roughly how much it costs to create apps for the iphone/ android? i keep thinking of ideas for apps but then get put off when people say they'll cost alot to make. Also where is the best place to look for people to develop them?

Hi Tabb7,
Prices differ between Android and Iphone, to develop for Iphone you need a developers account which costs money, however that said once you have it, you have it and you can just develop, develop develop. With android app we paid £25 to post it on Android Market and so whilst companies charge lots of money it isn't necessary expensive to develop an app.
For example the last app we developed was for the iphone and Android market, and it was to allow people to order from a shopping cart and we charged £150 per app, which is pretty good and are both available now online, and doing pretty well.

hi
thanks for the advice, i am unsure which platform i would prefer the apps on to be honest but android is still an emerging market whereas iphones are maturing.
So for example, if i had a simple app such as one where it just listed a lot of inspirational quotes, what sort of price would that be? but if it was a more complex one such as which pubs were showing the live football at the weekend app. how would the prices vary?

Apps vary in price wildly. You can get programs which basically build you a content app (like your list of quotes) for free and then you only have to pay to register it. On the other end of the spectrum you can pay tens of thousands easily for anything with serious custom functionality.
Odesk or rentadeveloper are good places to look for cheap app developers.

There's a lot of places, like odesk, peopleperhour, scriptlance where you can post your projects; however it's better to have mockups, artwork, assets and a list of things you want the app to do before you go to anyone otherwise it will cost you more in the end.
With Apple you need to sign up to the developer.apple.com programme, which is around £60 a year (I think), you need to also set up your banking information with them via iTunes Connect if you want to make money from In app purchases, subscriptions, or from people buying the app.
Also, you will need a device to test the apps on. Like an iPad, or iPhone, or Android device.
Android might have a similar process, but I do not know about this.
You can find agencies on TheyMakeApps, but they can cost £2500+ fixed fee projects. Higher still for games, unless that is you have all the artwork. I know of companies in London charging a minimum of 10k.
It really depends on the scope of the projects and how much you are willing to invest to make them.
I am a freelance iOS developer and have worked on iOS projects around £500-£1500 via PeoplePerHour, etc.
I hope this helps
