Are you crazy?
The likes of Amazon and Google have the marketing power to take on eBay but they haven't. Why? Because they'd likely lose or make a huge loss trying to break even.
If you have a niche idea, maybe you stand a chance. An auction website for charities, musical instruments, cars, etc. Maybe that "might" work, but I wouldn't fancy your chances.
Chicken and the Egg situation. Nobody will waste their time listing their stuff if you have low traffic. Likewise nobody will keep coming back to your website if nobody is selling anything.

Depending what you want to sell really! I've been in auction business for last 6 years. If you want to sell something what really interest people then you have a chance to grow.
It all depends on you. And don't be scared of eBay. You can be small but have a better service and better rates.
