There is no company number for a sole trader business - only if you set up a limited company. All you need to do as a sole trader (assuming you are resident in the UK for tax purposes) is register with the inland revenue within 3 months of starting up: http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/startingup They will send you the tax returns that need to be filled in.
