RE: Can I get some advice on the marketing of my new online shop?

Hi Lyndsey,
I just had a look at your web site. One of the main reasons your web site is not coming up on Google is because entire site is 90% Flash. I have no doubt and I absolutely agree that the web site is gorgeous, but being gorgeous sometimes does not help to push it up in the search engines.
Also, please have a look at your web site title. The title is most important line in the entire web site when it comes to the search engines and Google.
I don't know how much you know about how search engines like Google work but here are couple of tips: you have to make sure that your web site title lists all those words by which you want your customers to find you. Be short but very specific. List items which you are selling.
I have never been in furniture business but if I am your customer and wanted to buy a chair or a table, I would never type decorative furniture or stylish furniture in Google to find a chair, I would type chair or table. I am not saying your web site title does not say anything but I would suggest you to add couple of item names which you sell. ("Decorative chairs or decorative tables") Try to use the same word which you have in your menu (Furniture, Mirrors, and Lighting etc).
Also, as I mentioned above there are too many flash animations on your web site. Google crawlers can not index the web site when there are too many flash animations as they are indexing everything by text not by animations. They just can't see them.
That's why I think you need to put more information on your home page describing your business and using words which represent what you do.
Also, it really matters how long the web site is online. It really takes some time for search engines to properly index new web sites. Sometimes it can be even a month before it comes up on the search engine.
All above mentioned are just my suggestions which I hope will be helpful for you.
Please feel free to contact me if you have more questions.
I hope it helps.
Regards,
Berdia.

I’m a web design for http://www.101poundwebsite.com (low cost web design for small businesses)
Firstly I would like to say that your site looks great
I took a look at your site. The previous post is correct that flash is not good for your search rank. Other key factors though that your should consider is how long your site has been live for. Google can take a month or two to pick your site up and list it. An important tip is that you try to get inward links to your site, i.e. get other people to link to you. Not all links are good. Unrelated sites that link to you will have little or no effect on your search rank, but a link from a respected or highly relevant site will help lots.
I wrote a small blog about SEO and how to rank better. Take a look if you think it will help http://www.101poundwebsite.com/blog.php?aid=105

It’s very true that Search Engines do have issues with Flash, however I checked your Meta Tags (the text parts that search engines can index) and they look good. Usually about 12 'buzz' words of so should do.
Here are yours.... "Beautiful Furniture, Retro Furniture, Reproduction Furniture, Sofas, Chairs, Chesterfield Sofa, Vintage Sofa, Eames, Furniture Manchester, Rose & Gray, French Armoire, Mirrored Furniture, Rose & Grey, vintage leather furniture, armoires wardrobes"
Pay-Per-Click is a great way to get your company all over Google/Yell/MSN (and most other engines). You will be surprised just how effective it is! Not only is it instant but it doesn’t cost anything (unless people click on your website). And the people that would click through from Google are people seriously interested in making a purchase. My company Arkite actually specialises in this (Shameless plug!).
Best of luck

Other than content optimization, which in your case needs to rely on meta tags because of flash site, another aspect of ranking high in search engine is link building. Currently your site has only zero pagerank (on a scale of 1 to 10). Try to increase your pagerank by exchanging links, submitting to link directories, or even put your link inside the forum signatures.

Hi All
Thanks so much for your responses, I've taken it all on board. I'm confused however that you all think the site has so much flash as I made sure it didn't have too much and only included 2 flash files on the home page (one of which appears on every page as it's in the menu bar accross the top). Do you really think this is still too much?
Thanks again
Lyndsey

Pay per click can provide some pretty quick results but can be expensive long term. Natural is the best way to go...

Has the site changed recently?
This site is not a flash site - its a coldfusion site. Some of the above comments are b(ahem)ll sh(ahem)t
There is nothing wrong with the basic SEO of the site. As Matt said, you need to focus on building inbound links to your site and also have a little patience.
This is the reason the site is not ranking
http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.roseandgrey.co.uk%2F
The cached copy of the site is a "coming soon" page.
as soon as google respiders the site and finds all the new pages you will start to rank.
The first thing you need to do to the site to improve rankings though is get unique < title >< /title > tags sorted out for each category and product page.
keep an eye on this url

Have you tried any offline marketing yet Lyndsey? I am interested if you (or any other contributors) have, as I am doing this now, while trying to improve my google ranking as well. The best response I have had is from features in national magazines but it is really hard to get in these, even with a good PR working for you. Worth a try though!

Hi,
I've only had a quick look but I don't think the Flash should really be effecting this site in particular. If it was 100% flash then I'd totally agree with the original posters above, but all your links appear to be in HTML which means they are perfectly readable by search engines. Also you pages appear to be relatively search engine friendly, so I'd say a good job all round really.
The best way of boosting your site's rankings is to get good quality link backs to your site, that's the first thing. You're more than welcome to create a profile on our site myshopbag and add a few products if you'd like. We're a social shopping website that lets people add items they find on the web to the site from anywhere so a bit of free promotion for you really.
The main thing with SEO is that you have to be patient, I'm sure it will all work itself out in time... You have a lovely website, have faith
