Hello
I often wonder that while there will always be original business ideas, many will be new versions of an existing business. While these new entrants have varying degrees of success. For example Facebook and Google beating established competitors compared to the online auction sites that have not yet beaten Ebay.
I have the opinion that just because there is an existing big business out there that may indeed seem like a Goliath, there is room for another, as long as they offer something a little different (differences can of course vary wildly from improved service etc).
I am also aware that there are those that would not move into the same area because they think it is already dominated by the big boys and so why bother.
Im interested in what you all think about this? Could a new kid on the block become the next Ebay/Google. Im sure we have all had a new angle on an existing business that could improve it

Interesting question.
Yes, there is always room for innovation by offering something that is a little bit different. However, in certain areas like search for example, users are not willing to switch unless your product is way better than Google or you have a strong unique proposition. For example, DuckDuckGo, a new search engine, offers great privacy protection for its users and this has won them a lot of early adopters.
And there are also many innovators or startups in the search space that are doing interesting things. However, you need to realize that apart from competing against the big boys like Google, you might end up being acquired by them so that you can add value to their existing products.
Lastly, by being small, you always have advantages such as being able to push out iterations fast and listen to your customers more attentively.

Thats exactly what I meant. I think that by listening to the groans of big boys existing customers, you can look to develop an offering that will cater to this new niche.
I dont believe you have to become the next Google, rather, I would be just as happy with a fraction of the business as this would still provide a great living :-)
