Hi,
Ok this is my situation. I am starting a small domestic cleaning business, a one person business.
I understand that I will be known as a sole trader. The query I have is in regards to a business name. I think that it would be better to have some sort of catchy business name for the cleaning business rather than a name... ie. J. Bloggs domestic cleaning services.
So is this possible and how would I go about setting this up? Any other info relating to the business startup would be great.
Last but not least- How do people feel about having a male domestic cleaner? Could this possibly be my nique (spelling?)
Thanks alot and I look forward to your replies.

Hi there,
In the same boat myself, trying to find a name for my business. Actually I have plenty of names, but names that are available at companies house and on the internet are hard to find! I am beginning to conlcude that every word in the english language has been registered on the internet!
Anyway,
It's a hard one to answer - because it depends on what your plans/hopes are for the future.
If you plan to stay cleaning then "JayUK Cleaning" might be a good name because it tells the customer what you do. On the other hand, if maybe you have plans to expand then "JayUK Services" might be more appropriate as it does not pigeon hole you so much.
End of the day, business names can be changed quite easily, it's brands that are the bugger - so I plan to keep my brands seperate from my business name.
Good advice can be found here:

Hope that helps a bit.
Steve

Hi Jay,
a business name is a very personal choice, but going with something generic and non name and non georaphic is a good start. Youmay well have a niche market being male, but I wonder whether it may work against you also? For instance, some women may prefer not to have a male in their home for personal safety reasons. I wonder then, whether targetting male bachelors and trendies may well be your market?
Cheers, Nigel

Why not try using your surname and adding services to the end.
for example: Noonan Services etc
Best of Luck

As a sole-trader you can call yourself anything you like so long as you don't breach anyones copyright / trademark etc.
On any publication (from receipts upwards) you must include your own name, so that people know who they are legally dealing with. On a letterhead, most put a line of small print at the bottom saying something like "Joe Bloggs, trading as My New Business" or "My New Business is a trading style of Joe Bloggs".

If we are starting up in business then we must be business-like.
A half-baked idea is less benefit than a half baked-bean.
