I have a question about VAT and bringing in Italian designer clothes and handbags to a UK shop.
I live in Italy and was thinking of opening a shop in the UK as an outlet for discount designer brands. Am I better off paying VAT here in Italy or in UK for the goods? The rate is 20% here which is obviously higher but as I live here maybe I have to pay it here?
Secondly.... Am I allowed to 'ship' goods myself, i.e. drive over with them or in suitcases by air? Or is there a limit to the value of goods I can bring into the UK?
thanks for any advice!!

Hi,
Have you set up a UK company? You need to do that in order to set up a store in the UK. I live in Italy too & have just set up a UK company in a similar field.
It would be better to have your goods shipped over by your supplier or a courier, it isn't that expensive.
As regards IVA (Italian Tax), I suppose you have to decide if the items you buy from an Italian supplier are cheaper (including IVA) than from suppliers in the UK (with VAT included), it also depends whether you are VAT registered, in that case IVA will not be charged on your orders.
Hope this helps

Hi KeyPieces,
Thanks for advice. If we live in Italy should we be paying Italian tax ? It's complicated.....as a UK business - you would think we'd just pay UK VAT and Tax, but somebody told me I may have to register for tax here in Italy too. Are you running your business online? What part of Italy are you?
Ciao

There are few threads on this subject

There is little change in this post since posting. So the claiming back vat has changed. Also there are new rules from 01/01/2010.
