Hi folks,
I run a photography business and anytime I get some critique on my website, it's always by fellow photographers.
So it would be good to get some feedback from real people
Is the site easy to engage with, welcoming, easy to navigate, does it turn you on, turn you off etc etc etc.
comments welcome - good or bad
The website can be found at http://www.alanhutchison.co.uk
thanks for your time

Hi Alan!
I am a Graphic and Web Designer. I like your background (however it is a little pixellated, this could look ace once sharpened). The homepage is also very very long! The homepage should show some nice imagery - to show off what you can do, nice BIG photos, a welcome section and some call to action (phone numbers, email...twitter/facebook). The photos could be on a sliding gallery?
The red is also very dated. Red connotes danger and in some cases represents sexiness. I'm not sure you are trying to portray either?! I would say black/grey work great together and you can introduce another colour... purple symbolises wealth and quality. This would work well.
Have you considered creating a brand for yourself (logo?) - This way when you place it on your photos, it becomes recognisable and doesn't get lost - iconic.
Your photography is amazing. A sleek gallery would really emphasise the quality of your work, you are a fantastic photographer with some great photos.
Also because the navigation changes from page to page.... at first it was at the top then the bottom, this is very confusing and becomes hard to navigate - i'd recommend some structure, to keep users on your website. Consider the ones who are not computer savvy - they will just click off.
I'd love to help you. Please look on my website www.cfreshdesign.co.uk

Hi,
Your site is very informative and you clearly have accomplished a lot! I liked the style of it and it looks contemporary and modern. I like the red which I thought was a good contrast - but I am definitely not an expert in these matters! I also like the clean lines and the slightly masculine feel of it which balances nicely against the feminine nature of some of the subject matter (wedding photos etc). It connotes authority and professionalism.
I would agree with Claire in that the homepage is very long. The amount of information (on all the pages) put me off slightly. Sometimes less is more? Like Claire said, the homepage could have more impact just having a short amount of text and then some of your best shots. All the text is quite distracting and a little off putting (to me anyway).
Your photography is excellent, I am impressed by your body of work!

I actually like the way the homepage scrolls. I view your page on a widescreen monitor. I prefer to scroll than to have to navigate back and forth through links and images.
You have a wonderful portfolio. I like your canvas, the background and elements placed on it.
The grey wall-paper does however leave me with a slightly homely feel to your site. I feel I get a mixed messages here. In your work I see classy, contemporary, heritage, a bit of nature. then I get a modern impression with the bloggy elements with text. (Good Idea but less text would work better here I think). In short, I woujld try to loose the modern type elements and make the background less engaging as I can't help but look at it.
I would like to see larger images of your work. Maybe the background could be your work or something. Like the snap of a darkroom or something. A darker background would highlight your work more. For inspiration http://www.century21.com/. See what they do with their background.
But what do I know? :-)
Hope this helps.
Regards Clayton.
