Anyone use Google or Paypal instead of accepting debit and credit cards?

Hi folks,
I'm starting up my business and have been researching the costs of having a debit/credit machine to process customers’ payments. The costs are steep (and my transaction amount is low, which doesn’t help!), so I am tempted not to get a machine just yet, and instead wait until the business is a little older. But I want to give my customers as many ways to pay as possible.
I want to offer customers the chance to pay by cash, standing order and cheque, and I was wondering whether Google Checkout, Nochex and Paypal can be used as an alternative to card payments, and if anyone here does this/successfully runs their business without having debit/credit card payment facilities?
Many thanks.

I meant to add that I don't yet have a website, as the business is mostly face-to-face. Can you have something like Google Checkout and not have a website? Thanks.

this would interest me too. my concern is that i want to take card payments but can't really afford it - prices are steep - but my target audience is 50+ and as late adaptors of paying online i'm worried they won't use paypal, google etc

Paypal now offer Paypal pro with a virtual terminal.
It costs around £20 a month, plus a % of each transaction. I use it in conjunction with web payments and it works well, you just take the customers details and enter the amount and details online.
