Hi all,
Im looking for some advice and tips. My website has been trading for few months but im thinking that i need to make my website more niche and thinking of changing the domain name to fit this. I still want the old domain name to link to this but will this cause any problems and is it recommended.
Kind Regards
Darren

I'm not quite sure how changing your domain name will help. I think you need to work a little on your marketing. If you break it down this can be quite simple.
1. Identify who are your prospective buyers, If your answer here is' almost everyone' you are unlikely to succeed as you can't market to everyone. Try something like (just an example) Skateboarders aged 16-26)
2. Find a way, buy, get - a list / method to contact these specific people - (avoid tradition advertising unless you know what you are doing)
3. Contacted these people repeatedly.
4. When they have purchased from you stay in touch.
There's quite a few marketing tips that will help on my website that might help Free Videos / Marketing essentials. - Is all free
One idea that may work for you is to identify other businesses that sell to the same market as you then agree some deal that allows you to market to their customers. For example I am a member of an online film rental service. I received my film in the post yesterday and in the envelope was a flyer for an online supermarket company. I assume that the online supermarket company contacted the film company thinking they shared similar customers..... This might work for you with websites where your prospects hand out also as well as non competitive retailers.

I think im just being impatient, where i think something is not going to work i always look to change it. I will keep with what i got and just define it further to make it more appealing and more niche.
Jbriggs- thanks for all the info. May i ask from your experience how long its taking for business to roughly start being succesful.
Kind Regards

if you've got a lot of traffic. I am not suggesting you to change your domain name. Cause people have been so familiar with your site, you will loose a lot of prospect, but if your site doesn't have a lot of traffic yet, you can consider to change the domain name

Hi Darren
I don't think you can say how long it takes to be successful. It took my business 3 years before I started to make any money! You need to just keep tweaking your marketing until you find a rich vein of business.
Personally I'd focus on building up your customers, but then look in the longer term to the largest part of your revenue to come from existing customers. So many young businesses expect the growth of their business to come from new customers. In actual fact this is the hardest and most expensive way to grow. You will need to get new customers, but dont forget to market to you existing customers, keep in contact with them and keep reminding them what you sell.

I'd not fiddle with the existing site either - if it ain't broke don't fix it!
To use Johnathan's example above - if you were targeting Skateboarders aged 16-26 and your main brand was aimed at 18-34 year old urban professionals, you might want to do a sub-sect brand specifically for the Skateboarders with a link from the main site. That way it doesn't affect the existing site's traffic and the Skateboarders are catered for. On the skateboard site you can use skateboard specific keywords and branding which will appeal to your target market without alienating your core market.

Hi,
An option is to 'Add' a second domain name so you leave your old one and 'Add' a new one.
This way you would not lose any search ranking you have built up with your current domain name.
