Your comment about PayPal is interesting - there are no set-up charges, reasonable transaction charges and you could be up and running before Christmas.

I'm pretty sure they have more customers than all the others you mention put together.

One thing you may not realise is that you can customise the payment page to match your website, thus reducing the PayPal effect.  I used to be a customer of 2checkout (very good) but they withdrew this facility so now it is obvious that you are being taken off-site.

Finally, even if you decide on one of the other processors, offer Paypal as an alternative.  There are over ONE HUNDRED MILLION Paypal account holders, and as one of them I prefer to use the service wherever possible.

Companies like Ladbrokes, DHL & Sony-Ericsson accept it and you couldn't say they are "not really a business company".

There are quite possibly more people that know of or have heard of Paypal than all of the other payment processors put together. People trust PayPal and that's what's important... people are more likely to buy from you if they have trust in the payment processor.

With Paypal you can have your funds in your bank account in about three or four working days. WorlsPay hold on to your money for four weeks before transferring it to you bank account.

I know what you mean about PayPal and I would say the same with Nochex as well. In my honest opinion Paypal is Ebay no ifs or buts. Anytime I am surfing a retail site and see ways to pay (paypal) I leave and look elsewhere for the product, why because in my opinion it does not look professional at all.

We all know PP is huge but lets be honest it’s for people with eBay accounts and part time sellers. Another issue is I know people who have been conned through PayPal accounts and when they tried to speak with PayPal about the situation they did not want to do jack squat to help. Stick with proper merchant from a high street bank. In my opinion it makes you look a lot more professional and at least people know they can contact a high street bank they know if they have any problems.

I compared Nochex ,WorldPay, Metacharge and Paypal

Worldpay is expensive, but the set up costs and monthly costs of MetaCharge are even more expensive.They Charge for every additional crurency.  50£ set up per currency and 30£ a month per currency. As one needs 3 curencies (£,$, €) this is a rip off.

Nochex is the best providing low set up costs (50£) and low running costs (2.9% + 20pc)

PayPal is slightly more expensive: 3.4% + 20pc

So Nochex wins hands up.

Any one experienced with Nochex ?

I can't really comment on anything other than web-merchant.co.uk which I have just set up.

Set up times are 7-10 days. I only use a virtual terminal which means we can take payments over the phone and I think if you're trying to accept online payments the process will be slowed down by web-merchant having to verify your website etc. On the plus side you payments can be in your bank account within seven working days when payments are made online.

On another note web-merchant.co.uk do have something to do with worldpay and they try to introduce worldpay terms on you. Don't accept these!

The main problem with Nochex is the registration of your payers.

This is very inconvenient.

If you have finally won a custoemr, and then he wants to pay, registering becomes a hassel and might send away your potential customer.

Can I receive money from people who are not already registered with Nochex?
Yes. If you have a seller account then your Nochex account is Xtra enabled. This means that non Nochex members are able to send you up to £100 a day via the Nochex checkout, payment link or the QuickSend page on the Nochex homepage.

If a non Nochex member wants to send you more than £100 in one go then they will have to sign up with Nochex. If you would like the £100 limit increasing then please contact us and we will review your account.

If you're not Xtra enabled then if someone wants to pay you using Nochex they have to be a fully registered Nochex member.

Note: Nochex members are not restricted to this limit. They can send up to £300 a day

On the other hand: Worldpay is without real limitations

I use PayPal all the time and have had no trouble with it. I don't accept payment on line though. PayPal do offer a 'proper' website based version, in their Merchant Tools section, where you can have a shopping cart, add your logo etc. etc. and I think that looks as professional as any of the other sites, personally. There are no set up costs or monthly fees but their transaction rate can be high:
1.4% to 3.4% + £0.20 GBP ...and I don't know what makes some things 1.4% and some 3.4%! I haven't gone into that much detail about it.

It's interesting about the PayPal debate.
We are currently doing a test on our site as to whether introducing PayPal as a payment option would be good for us. We currently use Protx along with our Merchant account which works well and had no problems at all, there V good. But we thought trying to offer PayPal as a ways to pay might bring in more customers?? I have heard many other E-commerce owners say it doesn't look professional etc but thought we would give it a go and judge for ourselves.

We have actually found it incredibly successful. We are surprised how many people use this option and Pay through PayPal. But who's to say if we didn't have the option they would leave the site?? It is a lot more expensive though which is a big consideration when choosing payment gateways/merchant accounts.

Personally, I think paypal is good. I don't think it seems ebayish these days, perhaps a couple of years ago but now more and more online stores are using it. A lot depends on the presentation as well as I've seen online stores that use the generic paypal butttons and don't put effort in and I've seen online stores that look slick and you only know you are using paypal when it's time to pay.

If you are B2B then PayPal would not be your best option in my opinion. We have several sites and have tried PayPal on all of them - it is great for consumer-focused sites, but I do think that there are a negative views from some people about PayPal and that it is linked with eBay. We personally use Worldpay. Their % is slightly higher, but the easy of transactions, payments into our bank as well as the security of the credit card information made it worth it for us. We have quite high margins on some of our items, so its fine, but if your margins are low, you will need to look into things. Also, one beauty of Worldpay is that everything at your end is converted to Pounds Sterling, which from an accounting perspective makes it much easier
