Moonfruit, the UK’s leading DIY website builder, has partnered with PayPal to launch a simple e-commerce solution for start-ups.
The new ShopBuilder service will allow traders to instantly sell their products through the web, mobile and social media using a single online platform – as opposed to having to create a different shop for different devices.
ShopBuilder, which went live on Moonfruit.com on Wednesday, is optimised for PayPal, so traders can instantly reach their market by registering their e-mail address, without needing to set up a merchant account. Integration with eBay and other marketplaces is set to follow.
At the launch event, held at Paypal’s Richmond offices, Moonfruit CEO Joe White showed an audience of start-up entrepreneurs the speed of Shopbuilder by building, customising and uploading product to an e-commerce template in less than five minutes.
After seven minutes the site was configured to immediately start trading via PayPal, and after 11 minutes the featured products were receiving ‘likes’ on Facebook, and could be bought instantly through a Facebook app on a mobile smartphone.
Speaking at the same event, Moonfruit co-founder Wendy Tan-White emphasised the importance of a well-designed, universal website, saying that, because of Apple, “all consumers today expect a good quality design. Ten years ago people would put up with sub-standard design as long as it was functional – that isn’t the case anymore.
“You want to consider what that means to your product…One asset you really have as a small business is to make yourself unique”
Cameron McLean, general manager of merchant services at PayPal UK, explained:
“We partnered with Moonfruit because they have already helped hundreds of thousands of small businesses to build their own site quickly and easily with a PayPal integration included.
“By using PayPal express checkout, customers can now start trading immediately with a solution that works on mobile as well as the web.”
Ian Whiteling, director of social media start-up THREE-SIXTY, who attended the ShopBuilder launch, said “it was refreshing to hear Wendy stress the importance of effective web content and social media management, which many companies – both big and small – currently fail to appreciate.
