Hi
Just come upon this site and think it might be of help to me and my business partner-to-be! We want to start a softplay/shoppers creche/cafe in Worcestershire, we have seen a few units for sale and leased, can anyone advise us on the following:
- Bank/business loans for start up - recommendations
- advice on this type of business
- regulations - food and play orientated!
Anything you can offer - anyone??!!
Cheers, Rachell

My advice would be to approach Business Link:
www.businesslink.gov.uk
They do not charge for their advice and were set up to help small businesses. Look up your local rep and arrange a meeting with them.

With regard to business link, I know it's free but nevertheless please allow me to have my reservations and doubts on the quality of service and advice given (like with everything free). Some of our clients have been disappointed not only on the quality of business plans advice provided with (having the Banks asking them to improve and update those) but also on the degree of care shown (negligence rather!). So, I would suggest that somebody be cautious about using them and at least be aware of the inefficiencies. At the end of the day, what does that saying says: You get nothing for nothing in this world!

I must say that I personally used Business Link when starting my business and can highly recommend them.
For the information you are looking for they could definately point you in the right direction. If you then decide to go for a full business plan most banks have a small business adviser who can assist you.
I'm not knocking accountants (I used to be one) but when it comes to business plans they are not always the best option unless they specialise in this area. And it will cost you!
As I said, give Business Link a go - you've got nothing to lose.

Thanks for this, I have looked at the Business Link website so I will see about getting a meeting with a local agent, also I will contact my own bank about looking into an actual business paln, we have our own thoughts and loads of ideas but neither of us would know where to start with forward projection etc!

Hi
My husband and I are in the process of planning a very similar type of business in Yorkshire, we have had a number of meetings with Buiness Link and would say that it is worth utilizing the service available (even if you only learn a little!) We have spent many hours doing research, contacting suppliers etc. It may be useful to share contacts/ details of suppliers etc since we aren't going to be local competitors.
Creches are regulated by Ofsted. If you go onto their website www.ofsted.gov.uk you can order the brochure: National Standards for Under Eights Day Care and Childminding, this details Ofsted requirements. (I'm currently a childminder!)
Have you met with any soft play suppliers yet?
Good luck
