I need to take £10 off my customers after they have telephoned me and given me certain information. The only viable option in the early days is for them to post me a cheque or cash.
Would anyone know whether using a premium rate line might be another option. The phone call would only need to last about 2 minutes.
Can I have a premium rate number whereby callers pay a set figure (£10)for making that short a call?
If yes, would the costs to me be prohibitive?
I am thinking that this might be a better option than waiting for the envelopes to arrive and having to keep track of who has and who hasn`t paid.

I am not 100% sure but I think the set limit a premium rate number can charge in the UK is £1.50 a minute - this is governed by OFTEL.
http://www.oftel.gov.uk
No good to you as call would have to last over 7 minutes, you cannot make a set charge of £10 for a call.
Of course your other option is a credit card machine from the bank, but for these to be economically viable - you need to be doing a fair bit of business - not always an option for a start-up - am holding off myself at the moment.

You can have a premium rate (090x number) that charges callers a set rate per call. You will probably need to charge callers more than £10 per call though, because BT and the PR providers take a hefty % of the money.
Premium rate numbers are regulated by ICSTIS - www.icstis.org.uk - go there to read the rules/guidelines and to get a list of providers (or do a search on yahoo for providers).

Correct ICSTIS are the regulators and guideline makers , but are still along with everyone else governed by OFTEL.
Where do you get this info about set rate per call of £10.00 ? The numbering scheme I believe 090 7? has been set aside for product/service purchase via premium rate, but nobody given permission to set up, OFTEL have stopped this due to the possibility of an inadvertent call costing a fixed rate of £10 + and the very high possibility of misuse as anyone who receives these text messages will verify. You can have a set rate per call but not of that much currently, the limit is still (in the UK) £1.50 per minute, you cannot say dial a number, immediately hang-up and receive a charge for £10. As long as you are not dialling a '00' (international) in front of the call you have to come under the UK guidelines, set by ICSTIS, governed by OFTEL.
If you have alternative info on this, then please share it as all the info I have must be wrong.

Yes, ICSTIS are the regulators and guideline makers; if you want to set up a service you will need to register with them and, for some services, obtain 'prior permission'. It is unlikely you will ever need too deal with OFTEL.
My understanding, and I may be very wrong, is that 0905 numbers can be charged at a fixed rate per call (at any rate). Please let me know if my interpretation is wrong.

Yes thanks - thats the numbering list that I have a copy of, the 090 7 and 090 5 are "open-ended" but I believe this has not been authorised at present as it can not be properly controlled.
If it was not so - I would initiate a premium rate number at £1000 a call, and advertise it everywhere - call 090 5 XXXXXXX for free etc, you would not need many calls to make a tidy profit. As the misuse cannot be controlled, they are unable to release these numbers with open-ended tariffs, certainly if I misdialled and the call cost me £10 + I would not be paying my bill.
maybe someone on this forum has got a few premium rate numbers and can share a little more information - I know of one company who are stuck to the £1.50 per minute rule and a lot of that is taken by the network provider.

If anyone is looking for premium rate numbers I would recommend that you definately shop around. Premium rate numbers are available to us but we choose not to deal in these. As a rough price guide if you are after £1.50 you can expect around £1.10 a minute outpayment. £1.00 a minute expect in the region of 75p a minute, on 75p a minute expect around 51p a minute, on 60p expect around 39p a minute, on 50p a minute expect around 35p a minute.
As for pay for product services, ICSTIS is currently discussing up to £50.00 pay for product drop calls within their working groups.
If you visit the ICSTIS web-site and take a look at their monthly reports you will see that saveral companies receive large fines for not following the ICSTIS regulations. If your going to use premium rate numbers do make sure you follow the rules as could spell disaster for your business.

As far as understand, the pay-for-product is still a on going debate, due to the large call cost, I believe the fail-safe method was a suggestion, that a message was to be pre-recorded along the lines of "you have dialled a number that will cost £xx for the call, hold the line to proceed and accept this cost or hang-up " - however the various small minority of companies who misuse these services would take a lot or regulating and checking to ensure that they were indeed providing a suitable warning/fail-safe message.
I would be very surprised if at any time in the near future a single call would cost £10 - 50 to a UK premium rate number. I for one would be very careful not to call them, the so called tech-support helplines at £1.00 a minute for 5 mins of useless crap are a rip-off, wait till its £25 for somebody to suggest that you reload 'windows' or some other highly technical piece of assistance !!

they seem fairly ok, but i want to find out more...
I'd like some thoughts on this please.

Hello people.
Has anyone had any experiences with these companies that provide you with premium rate numbers, where you take a percentage, by advertising it?
How can you be sure of the amount of callers using your advertised premium rate phone lines?
With the companies that provide live chat services, do they provide the huge compensation bond costs to ICSTIS?
Regards,
Chunoo.

Hi Chunoo,
Coming from one of the telecom companies I wouldn't like to comment, however we all have to follow strict guidelines.
If you're looking for a well established and reputable company I'd look on http://www.ofcom.org.uk and http://www.icstis.org.uk as they are they UK telecom regulators.
If you'd like further information on premium rate services, the costs and how they work please feel free to contact me.
Kind regards
