Paypal
Do a search on Google Groups (http://www.google.com/grphp) for PayPal and you'll find plenty of comments.
A UK based alternative is Nochex (www.nochex.com) and NatWest has just launched FastPay (www.fastpay.com)
You may also want to consider something like Worldpay, though the startup costs are slightly higher.

Worldpay
Hi Steve
We have been setting up e-com systems for businesses of all sizes from large nationals processing £millions annually to local sole traders turning over far less.
We have always found Worldpay to be ideal for this. If you are considering Worldpay, please drop us a mail at info@a4internet.com or call on 0845 108 0411 as we would be happy to answer anyquestions you have.

Paypal is excellent! recommended!
Hi
I have been using Paypal for about 1 year and find them brillant, they enable us to receive payments from all over the world at a minimum cost compared with traditional credit card processing companies.
The fact they have been bought by Ebay.com should give them a boost to their services in general
They have different types of account s and suggest that you go with the premium business one... just worth it!

Credit Cards on the net
We use Worldpay for this service on our own site.
They are excellent and even talked us through the setup procedures on the phone. We have been running with them for a couple of years now, and we are very happy with the service.

We use Bibit (www.bibit.com) which is a Dutch-based international payment processor offering various payment methods. We recommend Bibit especially for international customers who need alternatives to credit card payment.
To use Bibit you don´t need an own merchant account - but you can. Their tarifs are quite moderate.
Another advantage is the unproblematic installation and integration of the payment system. Bibit´s service is very reliable. The technical documentation is easy to understand and even for non-specialists no closed book.

We use paypal and have found it to be a useful (especially for starting off). I recommend Nochex for direct debit payments. Worldpay is very good too but expensive if you are just starting out.

We have used WorldPay for some time now too. We found that the likes of Pay Pal didn't allow us to accept payment by UK debit cards such as Switch, not sure if this is still the case.
With World Pay you can have repeat billing automatically (like DD's but via cards).
One word of advice, if you do decide on WorldPay, do call them first prior to ordering on-line... We were offered £100.00 discount if we signed up within 7 days of the call. As it was we had already decided to go ahead before calling them. It's worth a call to save £100.00!

I am glad I read your comments, I am looking into who to use for my website at the moment and did the google search and it cam up with a site called paypalsucks. I obviously don't know how accurate the horror stories are on the web site but it has certainly put me off!
Anyway since then I looked into Streamline with Worldpay as the pay page and have found that they are not as bad as I was expecting and hopefully very reliable!
But still searching though, just to be on the safe side.....

We have actually just been shopping around again as we are about to receive our annual rental fee for another year. We decided to try the banks again to see what they could offer as I knew there must be a cheaper option to World Pay.
I spoke to our bankers who said that if I wanted to be able to take payments both on-line and over the phone we would need two seperate accounts each haing annual rentals and minmum charges per month of £35.00 plus about 3% for the credit card transactions and 39p for the debit card transactions. The banks version wasn't able to offer recurring payment dates either (like a direct debit but via a credit card).
After re-assesing the whole thing, we have realised that for us, World Pay is the most flexible and provides us with 'future-pay' that means we can charge customers monthly without having to chase them up each month for payment.
World Pay may seem expensive at first but when you shop around and look into the services it comes with in more detail we found it to be at the top of the list!
I hope this helps those of you that are currently shopping around, to think of all the requirements you could need.
