Businesses in the South East are being urged to register themselves to be eligible to bid for contracts for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Government business advice service Business Link said there are more than 15,000 opportunities for businesses, ‘which range from major construction projects to supplying computer software, security and transport right through to preparing food and drink to keep the Games’ staff and visitors fed and watered.

The organisation said businesses which want a slice of the £9.3bn available should register on online business ‘dating agency’ CompeteFor, which will match them with a project.

Since its launch in March, the site has had 32,000 registrations, and matched 650 contractors with £2bn worth of services for the games.

Paul Toben, programme manager for the London 2012 Games, said businesses need to register well in advance.

“The games will need reliable, professional contractors which match up to certain criteria,” he said.

“It’s no good waiting until the last minute and wondering why you didn’t get a slice of the competition – just like the athletes, we need to start planning ahead.”

“There are other opportunities out there too, like the £4.5bn spent by local authorities in the South East each year on providing anything from stationery and mobile phones to building hospitals and schools,” he added.
