A youth enterprise project has earned Nottingham the title of the East Midlands’ most enterprising place.
The ‘Business Breaks’ project offers mentoring and entrepreneurial skills development for young people from disadvantaged communities. Participants are encouraged to start up trading businesses in inner city schools.
More than a hundred students have been given the chance to run a business over the course of the project’s three-year history.
Alison Bingham, enterprise development manager at the East Midlands Development Agency, said:
“Yet again we are glad to see such strong competition from the region. The Nottingham City entry won over the judges by demonstrating their commitment to furthering enterprise in the East Midlands.
“Through interaction with the community they have helped to inspire young people and stimulate a ‘can do’ attitude which we hope will generate an enterprise culture and help reach the vision for the East Midlands to become a flourishing region.”
The Business Breaks team will now face a panel of judges at the national final of the 2007 Enterprising Britain competition, the winner of which will compete in the European Enterprise Awards later this year.
Lynne Franks, PR guru and Enterprising Britain judge said the competition has seen outstanding bids from all regions of the country.
“It is fantastic to see first hand the places which make Britain such a hotbed for entrepreneurial activity.”
