I launched my sites 3 weeks ago and they are now starting to appear in the search engines. I have developed all the sites myself having gone back to college in January to learn how to do this – so am self taught on everything and, just now because of budget, I have to remain so.
Can someone please give me some advice on search engine crawlers – is it normal just to get the robots to index your ‘index’ page and put the no index command on other pages? What do others do?
What I am looking for now is some practical advice on a specific matter. I know that a lot of you have various businesses that will be useful to me in the future but please don’t post if you are just trying to sell something. It would probably put me off contacting you in the future when I am looking for the type of service you provide!

Usually its quite customery to add a sitemap, and link from every page.
Usually it's best to ensure the spider captures all pages - as the number of pages you have, plus the number of pages you add can help your search engine position.

Dean is right, a site map can help the spider crawl through your whole site, so i would definately do that.
Another key thing to do is some research into keywords and integrate them into your site so that people can find the site in the search engines. The most important areas to include keywords are title tags, header tags, meta tags and the top 3rd of the page copy.
You also need to try and create as many links as possible, especially 'valued links' i.e. links with site of similar content.
This is a good start for you anyway

here is some advice;
1. create a site map.
2. interlink on the copy as many times as you can to other pages within your site
3. index only what you want the spiders to see
4. keep the site updaed as much as possible
hope this helps.
