I'm in the process of setting up an online shop, and will need the facility to take debit/credit cards on the site. As we don't have a trading history I anticipate setting up an account with a bureau. Do you have any recommendations for this sort of service aimed at small businesses? Horror stories about companies to avoid will be welcome too. At the moment I'm thinking of going with
www.fasthosts.co.uk but still have a wide open mind.
Thanks for any help

Hi Scott,
I have been using Paypal for credit card transactions for years, never had a problem with them and the rates are quite good.
How about using a high street bank PDQ system, I know that most online shopping carts can deal with these, the one that we offer our customers can use HSBC for example.
I dont know of any to avoid sorry.

There's no way to avoid charges - wish I was in the online card processing business! My only reservation about Paypal is image - to my mind, having your Visa card processed directly makes it look like you're dealing with an established business, while my perception of Paypal is that it makes you look like a hobbyist (and it puts an extra step in the payment process where the customer has to sig up with Paypal before paying you). Does this sound reasonable to you, or am I a bit behind the times? For the record I'm a satisfied Paypal user but I've only ever seen it on eBay auctions, not on a business website.

Scott,
We provide Credit/Debit card facilities for small businesses and new startups, there are a number of options available to you, obviously any advice I offer you will be biased. By the sounds of it you have spent some time looking into the market and discovered a lot of the options; the things that you need to look out for are the other charges; a number of providers will offer good headline rates however the other charges, which seem like small amounts actually change these rates significantly.
If you would like to find out more about our services, or even just get an insider's opinion on the best option for you please feel free to contact me.

I applied for a Fast Hosts eMerchant Account. We have a good trading history and for some reason our application was rejected by Optimal Payments. I'm glad actually, because we then came accross a company called Velocity who welcomed us with open arms.
Check out: http://www.velocitymerchantservices.com/
I would steer clear of PayPal for business use. I've had no problems using them, and the system is pretty good, it just puts people off. Velocity comes very highly recommended.

FYI - Paypal can now take CC payments without the customer having to sign up with them. They also allow you to customise the payment pages so they co-ordinate with your site. There is no doubt that working through your own merchant account is by far the most professional - but if you can't afford that then there is really no reason to not use PayPal.

Paypal have the best rates available, but I've heard some horror stories, but my hunch is these sites are set up by other card processors!
At www.jrsystems.co.uk i have just implemented HSBC's card processing. Not as bad to implement as some sites i found made out, although they are quite pricey (£200 start-up, £20 a month + 2.6% on C/C transactions). But as with everything, you pay for the name!

Velocity, does this mean there is no need to open a business bank account to have a merchant account with you?
Cheers

You will still need to have a business bank account or in the case of a sole trader an account with your name on it. The business account can be with any bank as long as they are on the IBAN and BACS systems which all UK and most EU banks are.
Hope that helps

Hi Scott
The fact that you don't have credit history should not be a problem.
One of our clients opened any company and got the Credit card agreement within 2 weeks - (with HSBC).
The conditions where not bad - better than our now conditions with Barclays after 10 years been their clients!
We arrange the credit cars service from Secure Hosting - that is a very low cost solution (£85 per year + 0.25 p per transaction)

Thanks for your adviced. It was very helpful and you were absolutely right about Barclays Bank, l have been their customer as well for over 10years and they did not consider me good enough to qualify for such an arrangement.
I got so upset l have now moved most of my banking activities over to some of their competitors. Let see how they like that.
Esther.

Hi Scott,
We will be able to help you out here and work out the complete solution for your business venture. We host all of our clients on our servers and all have been very pleased with the speed, facility and options available.
With regards to the payment side of things, we have worked with several clients on e-commerce and non-ecommerce accounts whereby a membership scheme is needed. We will be able to setup and build a site that is suited to your needs.
