A national charity is seeking to bestow the honour of the UK's most family-friendly firm.

The National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) wants to recognise employers sensitive to the time demands of busy parents who juggle their working lives while caring for their children.

The NSPCC Family Friendly Award is a category in the Employer of the Year Awards 2005, organised by the charity Working Families. Sponsored by executive search firm Norman Broadbent, the award is open to companies of all sizes and from all sectors.

Examples of successful working practices from the 2004 winners included flexible working to allow parents to attend school events and granting up to 15 days of compassionate leave to employees if their children fall ill.

"Providing flexible work life options not only take the pressure off families, it makes good business sense, too," said Charlie Monkcom, employment policy adviser for the NSPCC. "The NSPCC Family Friendly Award is a chance for employers to highlight their creative work life balance."

Firms may register for the competition at www.workingfamilies.org.uk.

The closing date for registration is 29 July, and winners will be announced at a ceremony in London in December.
