Working from home is an attractive option for modern-day entrepreneurs, with almost all feeling satisfied with the communication, security and work-life balance provided by their houses, according to a new study.

The research, conducted by Skillfair, found that a massive 96 per cent of homeworkers were happy with their ability to communicate, suggesting that internet connectivity levels and other devises, such as WAP, have lessened the need for entrepreneurs to work from an office.

Nine in ten of those quizzed were happy with their online security, while 89 per cent preferred their physical surroundings to traditional workplaces.

A further 84 per cent said that they were happy with the work-life balance that homeworking brings.

As reported by Startups.co.uk, small firms have previously been advised to encourage more employees to work from home to help cut property costs.

Flexible working rules are also seen as a potential benefit for businesses, with the low costs and high productivity level of staff working from home a big advantage to small companies looking to increase profit margins.

However, they survey revealed that working from home was far from easy, with over half of those quizzed saying that they worked longer and harder away from the office.

A quarter of respondents said that they lacked sufficient IT support at home, while 32 per cent complained that distractions in the house had an adverse effect on their work.

Gill Hunt, managing director of Skillfair, said that working from home seems to benefit both workers who do work from home and employers.

“Workers are comfortable in their home environment, work hard (and often much harder) and in the majority of bases feel they are more productive.

“Employers should encourage more homeworking to maximise the potential of their employees and contract staff,” she said.
