Recent research has shown that more than 40% of businesses across the UK have yet to send out a press release about their company.

A public relations company based in Lancashire documented the PR activity and expectations of 200 small and medium-size businesses and found that only 60% actively sought out media coverage.

The Buzz Group aimed to emphasize the difference PR can make to a company, and out of the companies surveyed, 86% of those who did produce regular news releases found this beneficial to their business.

Surprising though it may seem, many small to medium-size businesses ‘do not see the point’ in marketing their company or do not feel press releases are a priority.

A number of businesses questioned said they do not understand PR enough for it to be an advantage and are sometimes ‘unsure of what to write’ when attempting them.

Managing director Richard Glynn hopes to encourage businesses to unearth and distribute quality news about their organisation.

The Buzz Group has launched a nationwide competition to find companies who have the most newsworthy, but least covered, media stories and will provide free PR support to the winner.

The winner of the 'UK's Most Publicity Shy Business' competition will win a total of £1,600-worth of PR support. Businesses may enter the competition by visiting www.publicityshybusiness.co.uk where they may list recent and interesting business achievements which they feel deserved media coverage but went unnoticed.
