Ok, here goes with message number 2 (thanks all for the response to message number 1 by the way)
Right, I have a hot idea. Without giving too much away - I will be selling a service on the internet (nope not that kind of service! .. but anyway...) which involves small transaction payments. Initially I will be the sole operator, contact, business owner. My question is, where do I start? I need a company name - do i register it somewhere? what other legalities is there? is there a checklist i need? - business bank account? what tax is involved? - bleh, too many questions that could be answered in one URL link I guess.
Thoughts appreciated

Lufcmattylad, you best bet would be to use the search option up the top to search on individual questions/ That way you get lots of information.
Where to start: Have you done a business plan? This is always useful even if your not wanting funding it's a good way to get your goals laid out.
Company Name: If your on line you need to get a domain and hosting sorted out. Contact Phil (whose a regualr on the board) here http://www.simplycfhost.co.uk. The business name issue you can get more information on the start ups main page. http://www.startups.co.uk/
Bank account - Always best to get a business bank account. here is a search of the business bak account past posts http://www.startups.co.uk/forums/search.asp?mode=DoIt
Tax - you need to register with the inland revenue within 3 months of starting your business. It maybe worth you going to see your local business link/chamber of commerce as often they hold courses on tax and booking keeping. They will also walk you through all the steps.
Take a good look at www.startups.co.uk main page it covers most information.
Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the titanic!

Try your local Business Link or Chamber of Commerce. I used my local Chamber e business dept. for advice and found they had a website design service. They got me the domain name, designed the site, submitted to search engines, the whole package and I qualified for a grant!
