I am doing a little bit of research into the numbers of companies that do direct mail marketing:
- who they do it to (own customers, external prospect list)
- the responses you get
- what puts you off doing direct mail marketing?
- what would encourage you to do it (if you don't already)
- Do you know who your customers are? (age, income, gender, geographical info, family composition etc.)
I ask because the company I work for (day job) have a direct mail database and I want to know what companies think about direct mail and whether I can tailor my pitcha round the concerns etc.
Thanks,

Hi
I have done a number of recent telemarketing campaigns following up direct mailouts and have found that very few people even receive let alone read the actual letter.
An example is a call list of 500 only 3 people having read the shot, one of them I gained an appointment with for the client but it was nothing to do with them reading it.
MY clients are mainly business to business targeting SME's with 20 plus employees, just to give you a little more background.
Hope this helps
Jonathan

I use direct mail quite a lot, but it has to be specific to what i think the potential customers need.
I try not buy mailing lists, but gather the data myself (or with some casual low-cost labour help). I like to get names of decision-makers, even if this means ringing up each of the companies (only takes a couple of minutes each). I also split my addresses up into business-types and size, etc - a simple MS Access database allows me to gleam specific ones for any campaign i think about running.
I design a leaflet/letter specific to, for example, schools & colleges - i detail a number of my services that i know they might need, and i mail to named IT heads, etc.
I try to have a structure in my mailings. If i start by offering PC Repairs, then i move onto Networking or Accessory Sales, or something else the next time I mail out.
I also do quite a lot of leaflet drops to home-users and these are usually not directly addressed at all.
